About the Governor's Summer Internship Program:
The summer internship program allows participants to work with state agency officials and participate in co-curricular components to enrich their experiences. Interns spend at least 50 percent of their time on predetermined projects that enhance college-level skills and abilities. The co-curricular components of the program ensure competitive, reputable, and inclusive experiential learning. Interns participate in cohort weekly activities designed to enable:
+ Professional growth and preparedness for the workforce upon graduation
+ Exposure to many facets of state government
+ Networking and camaraderie development among the cohort
About the Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR):

Salary:
The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor’s degree.
A Day in the Life:
The Tax Policy Internship experience varies, depending on the time of the year.
+ January through March or April, Tax Policy is largely focused on legislative session in the Indiana General Assembly. Once the session concludes, the focus shifts to implementing laws that were passed during session.
+ By mid-summer, the focus shifts again to the development of proposals for legislation to be passed in the next session.
Our interns experience firsthand the legal, economic, and public policy practice related to a thirty-billion-dollar enterprise in state and local tax, while learning from attorneys and economists with decades of experience and interacting with members from every branch of Indiana state government.
Duties for this position can be tailored to the intern’s specific academic studies, which may include:
+ Assisting with the evaluation of proposed legislation
+ Helping to draft proposed bills and amendments to bills
+ Attending hearings of various committees and/or the General Assembly
+ Researching various issues
+ Calculating economic impact of changes to Indiana’s tax laws
+ Preparing guidance documents
+ Drafting and issuing individualized, prospective guidance to customers or their representatives, which involves analyzing the facts they provide and interpreting the tax laws that apply to their situation
2026 brings added work related to preparing for and administering a Tax Amnesty as established by Indiana’s 2025 General Assembly. The intern may also have the opportunity to work with the DOR Legal Services Team, the Appeals Team, other departments.
What You'll Need for Success:
+ Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
+ Academic work in related field.
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills.
+ Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline.
+ Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels.
+ Ability to conduct well-informed research.
+ Ability to solve complex, critical problems.
+ Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures.
+ Ability to maintain confidentiality.
+ Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
