    Deputy Solicitor General

     

    The mission of the Department of Law is to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers, and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General. The Department of Law is organized into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units and an operations division. The position filled through this announcement will serve in the Solicitor General Unit.

     

    The Solicitor General for the State of Georgia is now hiring for the position of Deputy Solicitor General. As the top litigator for the State of Georgia, the Solicitor General oversees the state’s appellate litigation, with particular focus on the United States Supreme Court, the Georgia Supreme Court, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. The Deputy Solicitor General role involves significant litigation responsibility, including managing cases, drafting briefs, and presenting oral argument. Lawyers interested in constitutional litigation, appellate practice, and public service are encouraged to apply.

     

    The Office of the Solicitor General directly handles cases of exceptional complexity and public importance, including by leading challenges to unlawful federal agency action and defending Georgia statutes against challenges brought under federal law and the state constitution. The Office also supervises the State’s amicus practice, regularly filing multistate amicus briefs in the Supreme Court and the federal courts of appeals. And the Office oversees high-stakes trial litigation and advises the Attorney General.

    Opportunities & Responsibilities:

    The Deputy Solicitor General participates in all aspects of the Office’s work. Responsibilities increase based on experience, but all successful applicants can expect to:

     

    • Draft and file briefs in the United States Supreme Court, the Georgia Supreme Court, the Eleventh Circuit, and other appellate courts

    • Present oral argument in various appellate courts

    • Prepare amicus briefs on behalf of multistate amicus coalitions

    • Review draft appellate briefs prepared by attorneys in other units of the Attorney General’s office and participate in moots to prepare attorneys for argument

    • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda for the Attorney General, the Solicitor General, and other senior staff

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Demonstrated aptitude for legal analysis, brief writing , and oral communication

    • Law degree from an accredited law school

    • Admitted to Georgia bar (or willing to pursue)

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Three to four years of appellate litigation experience

    • Experience managing complex litigation teams

    • Judicial clerkship

     

    Ideally, a qualified candidate would begin work in the first quarter of 2026. Please note your availability in your application.
