    Job Summary:

    Provides basic first aid services and/or participates in clinical health screenings in the community. Is responsible for meeting the basic needs of the patient by providing skilled levels of field patient care under the direction of the Community Outreach Coordinator. Is accountable for all basic emergency care he/she delivers and is responsible for adhering to all policies and procedures. Performs clerical duties necessary to the functioning of the respective departments.

    Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

    POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (% of Time)

    Essential Functions: The following are essential job accountabilities and performance criteria:

    Position Accountabilities

    1) General Patient Care

     

    Criteria

    A) General

    1. Carries out the patient’s plan of care as it relates to the patient’s physical needs under the guidelines of basic first aid.

    2. Delivers care requiring a broad knowledge of aseptic technique, medical terminology and equipment.

    3. Assists co-workers with procedures.

    4. Directs prompt and courteous attention to the needs to staff, patrons, patients, families and visitors. Retrieves, recovers or follows up on patient care needs.

    5. Contacts EMS to transports non-critical patients to the closest, most appropriate facility to complete ordered testing or admission, as necessary. All critical patients should be transported to the closest Level 1 Center.

    6. Communicates concerns or patient complaints to the Community Outreach Coordinator as appropriate.

    7. Obtains report from the patient family/staff regarding how injury/illness presented and location at site of first aid activity.

    8. Documents all procedures and care correctly in the medical record.

    9. Empties trash and soiled linen hampers after each event, or more frequently as needed.

    10. Identifies problems, gathers pertinent data, suggests solutions, communicates using appropriate lines of authority, and works toward problem resolution.

    11. Handles emergency situations calmly and in a professional manner.

    12. Independent ability to assess and intervene patient care necessities from a BLS perspective.

    B) Vital Signs

    1. Assists with obtaining arrival vital signs as well as repeat vital signs as patient condition indicates.

    2. Abnormal vital signs should be discussed with patients and work with patient to transport to a higher level of care (i.e., EMS or hospital transport). Patient may refuse medical advice, but must be included in documentation.

    C) Respiratory Care

    1. Assists with setting up and monitoring of oxygen therapy.

    2. Monitors pulse oximetry.

    3. Contacts EMS for hospital transport.

    D) Skin/Wound Care:

    1. Controls bleeding of open wounds.

    2. Clean wounds.

    3. Dresses wounds as instructed.

    4. Performs dressing changes as necessary (sterile and clean).

    5. Give appropriate follow-up instructions.

     

    2) Continuous Observation

     

    Criteria

    A) Patient Care:

    1. Provides consistent, direct observation of assigned patient(s).

    2. Remains with patient during first aid services until disposition.

    3. Intervenes when needed to prevent patient from harming self or others, calls for assistance immediately when necessary or for needed equipment/supplies.

    4. Two staff will be on duty for all scheduled events.

    5. Provides for mobility (i.e. ambulating, up to chair, turning/positioning) as patient’s condition allows.

    6. Respects the patient’s rights to privacy and dignity while providing care, with concern for safety as a priority.

    7. Refrains from eating or drinking while observing patient.

     

    B) Communication: Receives and reports information pertinent to the safety of the patient to the appropriate staff throughout the assigned period.

     

    1. Listens and acknowledges patient’s complaints and feelings.

    2. Conveys attitudes of compassion, empathy, and understanding.

    3. Refrains from conversations with patient regarding his/her medical condition.

    4. Obtains hand off report on the patient from the assigned nurse at the beginning of assigned shift.

    5. Seeks guidance and direction when appropriate. Contact the Community Outreach Coordinator and/or Administrative Director of Nursing, Emergency, EMS, Disaster, Community & Trauma Outreach Services.

    6. Informs authorities if patient expresses desire to harm self/others or wants to leave the area.

    7. Remains with assigned patient(s) until relief has arrived and is ready to take over.

    8. Documents observations in the manual medical record accurately and concisely.

    9. Reports significant patient behaviors on a timely basis prior to leaving at end of shift.

     

    3) Safety and Comfort

     

    Criteria

     

    A) Ensures patient safety.

     

    B) Assists patients with ambulation, repositioning, transfers from wheelchairs, stretchers, in and out of cars, etc.).

     

    C) Assists with monitoring those patients at risk for falling – utilizes recliners instead of wheelchairs; implements the appropriate fall prevention interventions as necessary.

     

    D) Provides hand off of care to the co-worker prior to leaving the patient care area.

     

    E) Efficiently operates and cleans equipment correctly and safely.

     

    F) Ensures that all patient care areas are stocked at the beginning of the shift as well as throughout the shift.

     

    G) Monitors supply levels and communicates with the coordinator in a timely manner when items need to be ordered.

     

    H) Ensures that clean supply areas are clean and orderly at all times. No supplies should be on the floor.

     

    I) Ensures that all areas of the department and clean and orderly.

     

    J) Conducts departmental safety rounds at each event and that the department is in order to maintain a clean, safe environment.

     

    4) Clerical

     

    Criteria

     

    A) Completes unit clerical duties including the coordination of unit activities and serving as a unit receptionist.

     

    B) Answers phone within 4 rings, identifying self, title and unit. Does not keep caller on hold for more than 1 minute.

     

    C) Registers all patients on arrival to first aid area.

     

    D) Other Clerical duties as assigned.

     

    5) Specialized Care: Provides specialized care to patients at high risk of and for injury.

     

    Criteria

     

    A) Pain Management

     

    1) Patients may self-administer Tylenol or Advil per request to first aid staff.

     

    2) Reports patient complaints of pain on first aid form.

     

    3) Asks patient about presence/absence of pain.

     

    6) Demonstrates accountability for own practice.

     

    Criteria

     

    A) Adheres to all quality and performance standards, policies, procedures, and protocols when implementing clinical and technical aspects of care. Participates in learning experiences that increase competence.

     

    B) Demonstrates appropriate technical and cognitive skills for the area of care.

    C) Maintains currency by:

    + Attends staff meetings/reviews minutes when absent

    + Participates in Committee(s), and Work Team(s) as needed

    + Keeps up to date with policies and procedures

     

    D) Demonstrates ability to change and adapt to changing work demands.

     

    + Responds positively to change.

    + Provides assistance and support to peers, co-workers and other team members

    + Adapts positively to changes in unplanned work load and job demands.

     

    7) Ability to relate to coworkers in a professional and appropriate manner.

     

    Criteria

     

    A) Orients and/or precepts new employees when required.

     

    B) Participates in and maintains a collaborative team approach toward work.

     

    C) Functions as a resource person to co-workers, patients/families, EMS and other members of the team.

     

    8) Safety/Infection Control: Performs job in accordance with safety and infection control policies.

     

    Criteria

     

    A) Cleans and prepares treatments rooms prior to patient arrival and after discharge.

     

    B) Practices standard precautions and disposes of hazardous wastes per established guidelines.

     

    C) Maintains a safe, clean, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families/employees in accordance with hospital standards.

     

    1. Maintains clutter free environment.

    2. Keeps personal conversations and background noise to a minimum.

    3. Adheres to dress code.

     

    D) Reports risk management concerns to Clinical Outreach Coordinator.

    E) Assumes responsibility for completing all annual mandatory requirements:

    1. Maintains up to date BLS

    2. Annual TB screening and Influenza vaccination

    3. Annual Ethics Training (Initial Ethics, if new employee)

    4. Annual Safety Training

    5. Annual Blood Borne Pathogen training

    6. Coursework as assigned for .edu

    7. Annual competency

    8. Age/population specific competency

    9. Orientation competency (if new hire)

     

    F) Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

     

    9) Service: Provides service excellence to the customers of SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital/Chaifetz Arena & other first aid venues by delivering timely, high quality care in a courteous, and respectful manner.

     

    Criteria

    A) Demonstrates care and courtesy

    B) Communicates effectively and maintains confidentiality

    1. Assists in developing unit based Performance Improvement and action plans.

    2. Contributes to data collection.

    3. Participates in evaluation of Performance Improvement results.

     

    E) Participates in occurrence reviews.

    11) Age Appropriate Care: Provides age-appropriate care to:

    D) Utilizes non-clinical time in a constructive, professional manner, i.e., .edu, mandatory education requirements, department cleanliness and restocking supplies.

    Job Specifications

     

    MINIMUM/PREFERRED EDUCATION: High School graduate or GED equivalent and at least 18 years of age. Post High School vocational/specialized training required (Prehospital or emergency department experience, EMT, etc.). Basic Life Support course & EMT License required

     

    MINIMUM/PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: 2 year previous experience in health care.

     

    WORKING CONDITIONS: Regular exposure to the risk of blood-borne diseases. Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances. Exposure to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, illness). Subject to trying and unpredictable situations. Handles emergency and crisis situations. Subject to irregular hours.

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Prolonged standing/lifting/walking. Lifts, positions, push and/or transfers patients. Lifts supplies/equipment. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, lifting, pushing, pulling.
