    Job Announcement

     

    Performs all tasks associated with the operation of the auto body repair shop. Uses all tools and machines required for all phases of body shop work. This position works under general supervision, using knowledge gained through training and experience. Duties include:

     

    + Performs unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in repairing and painting damaged bodies on a variety of motor vehicles.

    + Prepares vehicles for painting.

    + Sands, fills, masks, and cleans metal.

    + Spray paints, buffs, and polishes to obtain high degree of finish.

    + Applies lettering, decals and trim.

    Hourly Rate: The selected applicant's starting hourly rate offer will be in the minimum to midpoint range ($21.7574 - $29.0097) of the advertised compensation range. Promotional rules apply for current Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools employees.

    Illustrative Duties

    + Receives instruction in work processes and techniques from skilled Automotive Body Repairer to accomplish a variety of duties, to develop and acquire the skills, to learn the tools, equipment, knowledge, and safety rules and practices related to the inspection and body repair of vehicles and vehicle parts;

    + Performs work as assigned and within capabilities, utilizing hand and power tools and equipment of the trade; Receives continual supervision initially and less supervision as training goes on; Performs preparatory and incidental tasks as directed, such as setting up equipment for a job;

    + Assists skilled workers and keeps them supplied with materials and tools;

    + Keeps tools and equipment in working order by cleaning, sharpening, repairing and otherwise maintaining them; Drives a vehicle to or from work locations to pick up or deliver materials;

    + Keeps work areas and vehicle orderly and participates in the removal of trash and excess after work is completed; Assists higher level automotive body repairers as needed;

    + Attends work related training to include safety training.

     

    Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

     

    + Ability to follow written and oral instructions, diagrams, and manufacturers' manuals;

    + Ability to learn assigned tasks readily;

    + Ability to perform routine clerical tasks;

    + Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships;

    + Ability to wear a dust mask or properly fitted respirator when working, if required.

    + General knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade;

    + Basic keyboarding skills.

     

    Employment Standards

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade with coursework in vehicle collision or mechanical repair. Possession of a set of basic hand tools commonly used in the automotive industry, such as wrenches, pliers, and sockets and ratchets. Personal tools are required upon appointment

    CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

    Valid driver's license.

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer. This position is considered "essential personnel" and will be required to report to work during times designated countywide as approved for unscheduled leave regardless of the emergency situation (i.e., weather, transportation, etc.).

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    + Any collision repair training or schooling.

    + Experience performing automotive collision repair, mechanical, or preventive maintenance.

    + Possess a current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in Collision Repair/Refinish Tests or have completed the I-CAR Professional Development Program (PDP) for Collision Repair Professionals.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Must be able to: lift 50 lbs on an average of once daily; stoop, bend, twist, and reach many times daily; use ladders extensively; use creeper ( or get on hands and knees) several times daily; use hands or other means to do input in to crt/ communicate verbally and in print with others. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
