    About this Job

     

    The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is responsible for managing and protecting the state’s renewable natural resources, including all wildlife and aquatic life. LDWF supports a strong work ethic in its employees and incorporates the use of good science, accurate information and technology. The Office of the Secretary exists to provide leadership and support services, administrative direction, and accountability for departmental programs; administrative direction and leadership to ensure the success of subordinate programs; and department-wide coordination, communication, personnel and basic resources needed to accomplish the department’s mission.

     

    The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is currently accepting applications for Enforcement Cadets. These positions are responsible for the patrol of public and private land and water, including federal waters, using a variety of specialized equipment while enforcing laws, rules and regulations to protect and preserve the fish and wildlife resources, provides public safety services on the water ways of the state. Incumbents are subject to being on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Two years of law enforcement experience as a POST certified peace officer commissioned with the power of arrest; OR

     

    An associate’s degree from a technical college or completion of a two-year program at a vocational or technical school; OR

     

    Three years of continuous active military duty (all Military Occupational Specialties apply).

    EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:

    Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience.

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Willingness and ability to attain a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.

     

    Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

     

    Possession of a valid Louisiana driver's license.

     

    An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified by the hiring agency until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

    NOTE:

    This job has special physical requirements in that the incumbent must lift heavy objects (50 lbs. or more), walk long distances, work in harsh weather conditions, fire handguns, rifles, and shotguns accurately and have the ability to operate vehicles, boats, and all-terrain vehicles while in the performance of duties. Incumbents must also be able to meet physical requirements that include swimming, running, push-ups, sit-ups, and water survival training.

    Job Duties:

    + Participates in all academy training while assigned to the Waddill Training Academy. Participate in Basic Training Academy physical fitness program and academics prescribed by POST and the Enforcement Division.

    + Patrols public/private land and waters, including federal waters, using a variety of specialized equipment while enforcing laws, rules and regulations to protect and preserve the fish and wildlife resources.

    + Provides public safety service on the waterways of the state.

    + May be assigned to work and coordinate investigations in an undercover or covert capacity and may be required to infiltrate illegal activities involving fish and wildlife or other operations under the jurisdiction of the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

    Compensation: These positions have aSpecial Entrance Rate (SER) of $25.96/hour / $2076.80/bi-weekly base pay.

     

    Career Progression: The positions may be filled as a Wildlife Enforcement Cadet, Wildlife Enforcement Agent, Wildlife Enforcement Senior Agent, or Wildlife Enforcement Corporal.

    + Wildlife Enforcement Cadets are required to live within the state of Louisiana and are encouraged to live within their assigned Parish. However, Cadets may live 40 statute miles or less from their parish of assignment. Applicants should consider this residency policy when selecting parishes on their application.

    Wildlife Enforcement Cadets are required to attend the Enforcement Cadet Training Academy. The academy is located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and is 26 weeks in duration. Cadets are required to live at the training facility (may be allowed to leave Friday p.m. and return on Sunday p.m.).
