    General Function

    The Research Specialist II carries out research objectives or other projects defined by the Principal Investigator. The Research Specialist II performs work requiring advanced knowledge within the scientific discipline and uses discretion and independent judgment to analyze, interpret, and make deductions based on varying facts or circumstances.

    Description of Primary Duties

    **This position is grant funded and any term limits set out in that grant and/or that funding for the position is contingent upon continued grant funding.

    + Clean and analyze ecological datasets pulled from databases in accordance with the Inventory and Monitoring Division’s data publication standards

    + Generate Ecological Metadata Language ( EML ) metadata using the NPSdataverse R package to promote the discoverability of the data it describes

    + Contribute to R packages developed by other data managers to automate data cleaning tasks, where appropriate

    + Write reports using RMarkdown to document data management processes

     

    Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

     

    Education: A Master’s degree in a scientific discipline is required.

     

    Skills: Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are required. Must have the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff, as well as to communicate effectively with off-campus collaborators. Proficiency with basic spreadsheet, graphics, and word processing software is required. Other specific requirements depend upon the particular position.

    Additional Qualifications

    + One year of related work experience.

    + Experience using and managing relational databases (Access, SQL Server).

    + Experience utilizing geospatial data and GIS (ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online).

    + Experience working in natural resources or with ecological data.

    + Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills to communicate and document workflow status and process with program staff.

    + Demonstrated ability to ascertain the essence of an issue and effectively collaborate in a professional manner with an interdisciplinary team of data managers, ecologists, and park staff to develop and implement solutions.

    + Self-motivated with acute attention to detail.

    + Experience working in a collaborative environment.

    + Valid driver’s license is required by the employment start date, or access to a car and licensed driver.
