The Position
Job Appointment: Full Time, Regular position
Work Schedule: This position is day shift Monday-Friday; 9 hour days with every other Friday off. Evidence Control Specialists are not required to work Holidays.
Work Location: This position will work onsite at the Police Property and Evidence Division, 2619 NW Industrial Way Ste B4, Portland, OR.

Position Summary
Evidence Control Specialists are responsible for maintaining the chain of custody of evidence and property for the Portland Police Bureau's Property Evidence Division. These roles require attention to detail, strong customer service, and the ability to work independently while exercising sound problem-solving skills and professional judgment. This position involves working with the public some of whom may be frustrated or angry.
As an Evidence Control Specialist, you will:
+ Receiving and storing evidence from Police Bureau Personnel
+ Performing inventory control through a computerized record maintenance system
+ Advising police officers about proper property and evidence procedures
+ Picking up and transferring evidence and assisting in the destruction of guns, drugs and bio-hazardous materials
+ Run criminal history checks in compliance with state and federal law.
+ Physically maneuver and lift heavy objects, picking up and transferring evidence and assisting in the destruction of guns, drugs and bio-hazardous materials.
+ Utilize strong customer service and de-escalation techniques when handling emotionally distraught individuals.
+ Manage confidential and sensitive information within a fast-paced environment.
+ Work with initiative, independence, and confidentiality, while exercising sound problem-solving skills and professional judgment.
Working Conditions:
Work in this class is performed in office, warehouse and vault environments. On a daily basis, walking, standing, and bending/kneeling for long periods of time are frequently required. At times, the incumbent will be required to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance. The frequency of this requirement will fluctuate on a weekly basis, variations of this frequency will depend on the nature of the evidence. Incumbent is also required to handle chemical and biological hazards, drugs and firearms on a daily basis and is exposed to emotionally distraught individuals.

To Qualify
Applicants must describe in their supplemental question responses and résumé how their education, training, work experience and/or lived experience, meets each of the following minimum qualifications:
+ Experience related to material handling and inventory control (such as within a warehouse, evidence control, or related field).
+ Experience operating computerized inventory systems used for warehousing, storing, locating and retrieving items, or any other similar related experience.
+ Experience providing effective customer service including de-escalation techniques when dealing with upset and/or emotionally distraught customers.
+ Experience interpreting and applying specific rules, regulations, laws, and procedures.
+ Ability to provide excellent attention to detail while working with a dynamic workload.
Applicant Must Also Possess:
+ The ability to successfully pass an in-depth background investigation.
+ The ability to pass a Post Offer Physical that will involve a variety of activities such as squatting, kneeling, lifting up to 50lbs, twisting, etc.
+ The ability to obtain Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) Certification within six months of hire.
+ The ability to obtain a Forklift Certification within six months of hire.
+ A valid state driver's license with a qualifying driving record at time of hire.
+ Ability to be fit-tested and routinely wear a respirator while handling hazardous materials (chemical, biological and organic).
Preferred Qualifications:
Although not required, you may have one or more of the following:
+ Law enforcement experience OR
+ Property evidence knowledge and/or experience

Step 2: Minimum Qualification Evaluation: Week of December 1, 2025

Step 5: Contingent Offer of Employment: January
+ Some positions will require those offered employment to complete and sign a criminal background statement before being considered for employment.
Step 6: Background Investigation: TBD
Background Investigations for this position typically take 2-3 months to complete so you will want to plan accordingly.
