Job Description
Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) manages and operates the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Responsiblities
The Enhanced Capabilities for Subcritical Experiments (ECSE) Directorate is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer (Senior or Principal level) to support the implementation of design and efficient operation of Scorpius Accelerator. Scorpius will be used to generate high-energy x-ray bursts to take radiographic images on subcritical experiments (SCEs) at the Principal Underground Laboratory for Subcritical Experimentation (PULSE) facility located at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). This position is based in Nevada but may require travel to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL).
Key Responsibilities:
+ Collaborate with our partners at LANL, LLNL, and SNL to understand and document the needs and constraints of the Scorpius system, defining both functional and non-functional requirements.
+ Collaborate with the Asset Manager to develop a structured hierarchy to enable the tracking of individual components of the accelerator up to the entire integrated system.
+ Collaborate with the Asset Manager to develop Asset management Plans for controlling lifecycle maintenance of the Scorpius accelerator.
+ Assist with the integration of CREO based design documents from our partners at LANL, LLNL, and SNL into a cohesive, fully functional model.
+ Work with Scorpius system Subject Matter Experts to document the structure, components, and interrelationships within the Scorpius system, ensuring that all parts work effectively together.
+ Perform and/or support verification and validation testing to ensure that the system meets the defined requirements.
+ Identify risks and develop mitigations plans, working with the LANL risk manager.
+ Employ trouble-shooting and problem-solving skills to resolve unexpected issues that develop during installation, commissioning and operations.
+ Develop documentation to ensure configuration management of the system is maintained over its 30-year lifecycle.
+ This job requires everyday collaboration with engineers, technicians, designers, Craft, vendors, and Laboratory Partners to make sure that the configuration management of the system is established and maintained.
+ Plan and prepare administrative and technical documents as required.
+ Actively participate in regulatory investigations, corrective action plans, and continuous improvement planning.
+ Frequent travel to the NNSS forward areas is required (approximately 30 miles beyond the Mercury gate).
Senior Engineer:
+ Devises imaginative, thorough, and practical solutions requiring evaluation of standards and processes. Solutions may be unique.
+ Contributes to strategies, reports and technical proposals.
+ Receives general direction and technical guidance on complex issues and projects of broad scope.
+ Performs technical activities that require interpretation and correlation of codes and standards, complex computer software, and unique processes and procedures tailored for the work being executed.
+ Serves as lead on teams requiring coordination with other teams. Coordinates work with other project team members.
Principal Engineer
+ Devises solutions to highly complex technical problems of broad scope. Solutions may require resolving conflicting customer expectations and design requirements, utilizing unconventional technology and materials, and cross-disciplinary integration.
+ Provides expertise in operational goals.
+ Serve as consultant to less experienced engineers, providing practical advice on implementation of solutions for organizational goals.
+ Defines customer needs and develops technical proposals.
+ Oversees equipment and procedures for testing and solving problems.
+ Keeps abreast of new technological developments, methods or materials, keeping management informed of important new advances.
+ Ensures team’s processes and deliverables comply with laws, codes, orders, and MSTS policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
Senior Engineer - ($99,340.80 to $149,011.20)
+ Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees.
+ Or Calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering.
+ Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering Preferred
+ Or Professional Engineer license
+ Plus at least 5 years’ relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge. Graduate research experience may be recognized.
+ Experience in systems engineering in a technical or research and development environment, preferably managing complex industrial or scientific machinery is preferred.
Principal Engineer - ($119,246.40 to $181,854.40)
+ Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees.
+ Or, Calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering.
+ Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering Preferred
+ Or Professional Engineer license

Minimum Qualifications:
+ Proven ability to manage complex projects and deliver results within established timelines.
+ Proven ability integrating electrical, mechanical and control systems in large complex machinery.
+ Demonstrated ability to read and understand drawings.
+ Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills to effectively collaborate with various stakeholders.
+ Highly accomplished technical writing skills and affinity for producing procedures and documentation.
+ Demonstrate a strong ability to identify, analyze and solve problems.
+ Ability to work under minimal supervision, follow written and verbal instructions, work independently, and work as part of a team.
+ Ability to execute work in a disciplined manner to demonstrate compliance with laws, codes, orders, and MSTS policies and procedures.
+ Proficiency in Microsoft suite of software.
+ Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Working knowledge of Creo computer aided design and drafting (CADD) software and Windchill PDM.
+ Demonstrated proficiency with Maximo or a similar enterprise asset management (EAM) system.
+ Experience in digitally twinning technologies and its application to complex systems.
+ Knowledge of risk management principles as applied to asset health and operational reliability.
+ Strong understanding of development of lifecycle management principles, including design, acquisition, operation, maintenance, and disposal.
+ Experience working in a team environment that includes scientists, engineers, technicians, designers, and Craft/maintenance personnel.
+ Experience with accelerator facilities, research infrastructure, or other highly specialized scientific equipment is highly desirable.
+ Familiarity with Department of Energy (DOE) regulations and requirements related to asset management and facility operations a plus.
Additional Information:
+ The primary work location will be the Losee Road facility in North Las Vegas, Nevada with frequent visits to the Nevada National Security Site (forward areas are approximately 90 miles from North Las Vegas).
+ Travel will be required, initially up to 25%, to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL).
+ Work schedule for this position will be 4/10’s, Monday – Thursday (subject to change).
Annual salary range for this position is:
**Senior Engineer** - ($99,340.80 to $149,011.20)
**Principal Engineer** - ($119,246.40 to $181,854.40)
MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
