    Position Summary

    The Peer Specialist provides direct mental health support to individuals participating in rehabilitation and recovery services. This role promotes self-help skills, coping strategies, community integration, and increased hope and self-esteem. Drawing from lived experience, the Peer Specialist models recovery, supports skill development, and empowers recipients to regain control over their lives.

    Essential Accountabilities

    + Participate in required training, in-services, supervision, and OMH-approved ACT orientations.

    + Teach skills to individuals and groups, focusing on coping strategies and symptom management.

    + Advocate for recipients and coordinate with service providers to ensure access to needed supports.

    + Engage consumers through shared experiences, offering empathy and encouragement in recovery.

    + Participate in on-site and community-based activities; escort consumers to appointments and services as appropriate.

    + Assist recipients with travel training and accessing community resources and supports.

    + Support planning and coordination of recreational and social activities, including participation when needed.

    + Assist consumers with case management needs, including transportation, benefits/entitlements, and other team-directed tasks.

    + Contribute to treatment planning with the ACT team and consumers when applicable.

    + Coordinate services with clinicians, nurses, and other ACT staff to ensure continuity of care.

    + Enter required information into CAIRS upon admission, bi-annually, and at discharge.

    + Document progress notes and status updates in the EHR within 48 hours of client or collateral contact.

    + Participate in team meetings and provide coverage for staff as needed.

    + Report and document all incidents to the supervisor within 24 hours.

    + Maintain confidentiality and ensure compliance with OMH, agency, and program standards.

    + Support skill-building in areas such as:

    + Budgeting

    + Grooming and hygiene

    + Nutrition planning

    + Public transportation use

    + Community resource navigation

    + Shopping and housekeeping

    + Physical health and wellness

    + Adaptive behavior and independent living

    + Vocational and social development

    Qualifications

    Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills and the ability to empathize with, relate to and effectively work with recipients of mental health services.

     

    + Life experience with mental health or substance abuse history.

    AND

    + Two years of active participation in mental health self-help activities, peer support or peer advocacy programs, or recipient run organizations or similar experiences or programs.

    + New York State Peer Specialist Certification, or willing to complete the certification within one year of employment.

    + High school diploma or GED preferred, not required.

    + Valid New York State Driver’s license and vehicle.
