    Job Summary

    The Pharmacy Analytics Director position at University of Michigan Health (UMH) is a key enterprise leader for the Department of Pharmacy (DOP). This is a system-level role that supports the data and analytics needs for the multiple pharmacy-related programs and/or areas including the overall operation of UMH's pharmacy services. Specifically, this position leads planning, organization, and execution of pharmacy-related data, analytics, dashboarding, key performance indicator (KPIs) development, data engineering, analytics, automation and orchestration, and data modeling. This position ensures all data systems operate in accordance with MM policies and procedures, standards of practice based on alignment with national organizations, and state/federal laws.

     

    This position oversees the strategic delivery of data solutions across the system to support high-value improvement efforts throughout Michigan Medicine AMC and Regional pharmacy, including specialty pharmacy expansion, 340B regulatory reporting, clinical pharmacy KPIs and pharmacy financial performance. The director collaborates with leadership to identify problems, ensure data availability, and drive continuous improvements. This role is responsible for leading a team of at least 3 direct reports, with the skills of developers, analysts, data scientists and data engineers, providing managerial and functional oversight, coaching, and mentoring to ensure successful project execution and staff development

    Organizational Relationships:

    Has a direct reporting relationship to the Chief Pharmacy Officer.

     

    Partners closely with Pharmacy leaders throughout the system, as well as corresponding leaders in the Region, affiliated medical groups, University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, and corresponding leaders in acute and ambulatory care delivery.

    Responsibilities*

    Strategic Oversight & Team Management

    + Lead a team with skills of developers, analysts, data scientists and data engineers, providing managerial and functional oversight, coaching, and mentoring to ensure successful project execution and staff development.

    + Collaborates with leadership to identify problems, ensure data availability as actionable information to improve outcomes, and drive continuous improvements.

    + Provide strategic guidance and thought leadership to shape the department's data strategy and leverage data for business value.

    Technology Implementation & Data Innovation

    + Review and improve code, architect and implement new technologies and solutions to address evolving pharmacy needs, including those supporting regional health system integration.

    + Develop and test new technologies for seamless integration and optimal performance within complex data architectures.

    + Apply novel machine learning approaches to solve complex pharmacy problems, leveraging domain and technical expertise.

    + Research and maintain knowledge in emerging technologies to drive innovation.

    + Direct and lead efforts for technologies including Linux, Docker, Gitlab, Gitlab CI/CD, Python, SQL, DBT, Prefect, Tableau, server hardware, analytics, and machine learning.

    Data Infrastructure, Integration & Requirements Gathering

    + Responsible for data integration and technical stack, ensuring highly reliable data infrastructure to support critical department needs, including financial reporting and regulatory oversight across multiple pharmacy units (community, infusion, inpatient, specialty, and business operations).

    + Guide business analysts, systems analysts, process managers, and engineers in requirements gathering and reviews.

    + Maintain critical pharmacy data infrastructure, ensuring data accuracy, and anticipating departmental needs.

    + Work with pharmacy and enterprise teams to produce optimal, conceptual designs for projects that integrate across applications, systems, platforms, services, and processes.

    + Oversee hundreds of daily ETL processes, maintain data warehouse integrity and performance, ensure data modeling accuracy across all warehouse tables, validate dashboard accuracy and reliability.

    Process Improvement & Special Projects

    + Propose and implement changes in process, policy, and standards related to architecture, service, and design principles to optimize workflows and efficiency.

    + Lead special pharmacy enterprise assignments, leveraging expertise across multiple disciplines to drive successful outcomes.

    + Demonstrate financial stewardship of technical resources (e.g., hardware, software) required to support data integration and innovation systems.

    Required Qualifications*

    + **Education:** Master's degree in data science, data analytics, data-related field or business-related field (or equivalent) required

    + **Experience:** At least 5-10 years of experience as a lead/senior analytics administrator in a healthcare-related setting, with at least 2 years of management experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred. Experience with pharmacy-related data is required.

    + Effective communication (written and verbal) skills

    + Demonstrated decision-making skills

    + Demonstrated success leading projects and initiatives to improve efficiency, quality, safety and service levels in a complex healthcare environment as well as budget and control cost

    + Ability to recruit, train and retain highly skilled professional staff

    + Strong knowledge, experience and skills in pharmacy informatics and technology within pharmacy and health systems

    + Proven leadership skills in motivating, developing, and empowering leaders and staff; ability to adequately appraise performanc

    + Track record of collaboration and effective partnerships with internal stakeholders

    Background Screening

     

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
