The Senior University Dean of Academic Innovation is a visionary leader responsible for driving transformative academic strategies and fostering innovation across the City University of New York (CUNY) system. This role is integral in shaping the future of academic technology, online education, and artificial intelligence (AI) integration, ensuring that CUNY remains at the forefront of accessible, high-quality, and flexible education.
Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor and University Provost, the Senior University Dean will collaborate with senior leadership, faculty, administrators, and key stakeholders across the university’s colleges to modernize academic infrastructure, expand high-quality educational offerings in both traditional and online modalities, and advance the University’s AI initiative. The incumbent will also oversee the Office of Academic Innovation Implementation and CUNY Online, leading strategic efforts to enhance digital learning, student success, and institutional effectiveness.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
+ Develop and execute a comprehensive strategy for the adoption, governance, and enhancement of academic technologies across CUNY institutions, collaborating with academic and administrative technology leaders to align emerging technologies with institutional priorities and ensure their seamless integration into teaching, learning, admissions, and student success frameworks.
+ Establish policies and best practices to promote equitable and effective use of instructional and academic technology in diverse learning environments, while serving as the primary liaison between the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA), CUNY Information Systems (CIS), and Procurement to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance in technology-related initiatives.
+ Lead the expansion and continuous improvement of CUNY Online by developing and delivering high-quality online courses, degree programs, and noncredit workforce education opportunities, while designing strategies that enhance access, flexibility, and student engagement in online and hybrid learning environments for both traditional students and lifelong learners.
+ Promote partnerships among faculty, instructional designers, and industry stakeholders to broaden digital education and improve online teaching methods.
+ Lead the strategic development of CUNY’s Academic AI initiative to foster sustainable AI capacity and adoption across academic affairs throughout the University, positioning CUNY as a national leader in AI-driven education and research, while leveraging AI to enhance student learning, faculty research, and academic operational efficiencies.
+ Collaborate with CUNY institutions to empower faculty, students, and administrators with AI tools that enhance academic and institutional outcomes.
+ Create policies and frameworks that promote responsible AI usage, emphasizing ethical considerations, data privacy, and equitable practices in AI applications.
+ Develop and maintain process maps to streamline workflows across academic units.
+ Implement business automation solutions to reduce manual tasks and improve operational efficiency.
+ Lead continuous process improvement initiatives to optimize academic and administrative systems.
NOTE:
Until further notice, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum:
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.
Preferred:
+ An advanced degree in a related field such as education, instructional technology, higher education administration, or a technology-driven discipline
+ Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in higher education administration, academic technology, online learning, or digital innovation
+ Deep knowledge of emerging technologies in education, including online learning platforms, AI applications in academia, and digital transformation strategies
+ Proven experience in strategic planning, technology implementation, and cross-functional collaboration within a complex university system
+ Strong ability to engage with faculty, administrators, IT leaders, and external partners to drive academic innovation and student success
+ Demonstrated commitment to equity, access, and inclusive excellence in education

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The salary range is **$217,000 - $232,656** , commensurate with credentials, education, and experience.
