Position Summary
Slippery Rock University’s Department of Curriculum, Instruction, & Educational Leadership ( CIEL ) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in K–12 Mathematics or Science Education. CIEL is deeply committed to preparing future educators and leaders through innovative, inclusive, and experiential learning. Faculty and students work closely with local schools through a variety of partnerships to prepare candidates to meet the learning needs of diverse populations. The ideal candidate thrives in a collaborative, student-centered environment and is committed to continuous improvement. Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
+ Teach undergraduate and graduate courses focused on math and/or science education, including curriculum design, instructional strategies, assessment, and technology integration.
+ Supervise and mentor teacher candidates on-site during field experiences and student teaching across K–12 settings.
+ Build and strengthen current partnerships with local and regional schools, facilitate community engagement, and establish new pathways for innovative, experiential learning opportunities.
+ Maintain an exemplary record of scholarly growth through research, publications, presentations, and grant funding.
+ Provide supportive and consistent academic advisement to current majors and actively engage in university and departmental recruitment and retention events.
+ Contribute to program development and accreditation efforts ( PDE / CAEP ).
+ Participate in service activities within the department, college, university, and community.
+ Be an active part of the College of Education’s mission to prepare high-quality, ethical, and reflective professionals committed to meeting the needs of diverse learners.
Minimum Qualifications
+ A doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in Mathematics Education, Science Education, Curriculum & Instruction with a STEM focus, or a closely related field.
+ Successful teaching experience in K–12 math or science (elementary, middle, or secondary).
+ Familiarity with state and national standards (e.g., PA Core Standards, NGSS ).
+ A strong foundation in inclusive teaching practices like Universal Design for Learning ( UDL ), Differentiated Instruction (DI), and culturally responsive pedagogy.
+ Evidence of scholarly potential and contributions to the field.
+ Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
+ PDE certification (or equivalent) in math or science.
+ Experience mentoring or supervising pre-service/in-service teachers.
+ Interest or experience in externally funded research or school-university partnerships.
+ Comfort with digital learning tools and tech-based instructional strategies.
+ Experience teaching in online or hybrid formats.
+ A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
+ Leadership experience at the building or district level, such as serving as a department chair, instructional coach, curriculum coordinator, principal, or in other administrative or leadership roles within K–12 education.
+ Teaching experience at middle and/or secondary grade levels.
