Essential Job Functions
Job Duties as an Intermediate Typist-Clerk
+ Produces abstracts of judgment, executive notices, and similar documentationrequiring high accuracy or independent judgment in selecting materials.
+ Produces sophisticated charts, forms, statistical, and similar documentsfrom rough drafts, requiring skill in arranging tabular material, setting up forms, and utmost typing accuracy.
+ Process documents according to a specifiedand technical procedure for such purposes as formulating property descriptions and recording and indexing court papers, transcripts, and legal processes.
+ Verify documents for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with relevant legal and regulatory requirements.
+ Respond to inquiries and offer information to the Public regarding regulations and procedures; prepare and file legal forms, applications, and permit requests; act as a special receptionist or counter clerk.
+ Keeps recordsrequiring particular knowledge, discrimination, and judgment in the selection, compilation, or computation of data to be included, such as cost data records and distribution and control ledger, which can be posted without extensive knowledge of bookkeeping principles.
+ Maintains clerical controlswhere work is divided among personnel performing separate parts of an entire operation.
+ Searches recordsand filesfor data where judgment and discrimination are required in selecting or abstracting material.
+ Answers correspondencethat requires data selection, vital in formulating the reply, and refers unusual cases to a supervisor for approval.
+ Estimates the amount due and collects fees.

Requirements to Qualify:
Option 1: Six months of office clerical experience involving typewriting in the service of the County of Los Angeles or in districts under the jurisdiction of the County of Los Angeles-OR-
Option 2: One year's office clerical experience involving typewriting outside the service of the County of Los Angeles-OR-
Option 3: A certificate or Associate of Arts degree in clerical procedures or office administration from an accredited university*

Typing Skill Requirement
Demonstrated ability to type at the rate of 40 net words per minute (NWPM).
You may not need to take a typing test if you meet any of the following:
1. Current or former County employees who have held a typing position that required the necessary wpm.
2. Applicants who have already taken and passed the County's typing performance test (administered by the Department of Human Resources) at the required wpm. If your passing score is already on file, it will be transferred automatically—no need to retest.
3. Applicants who passed the “Typing Test – Score-Banking Only” with the required net wpm. Your score will also transfer automatically.
4. Applicants who passed a County typing test through a different department (not DHR), please attach a copy of your typing certificate to your application when you apply. If you can’t attach it during filing, you must email it to [email protected] seven (7) calendar days.
Candidates who have not taken the typing performance test or met the typing requirement, as mentioned above, will be provided with a link to the Los Angeles County typing performance test during the examination process.
Withhold information:
No withholds will be allowed for this examination. Required experience, education, or certification must be fully met at the time of filing and clearly indicated on the application.
License:
A valid California Class C Driver's License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Physical Class:
Physical Class II – Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

Eligibility and Vacancy Information:
Candidates who passed the assessment(s) are placed on a list for a period of six (6) months. We will use this list to fill vacancies in the County of Los Angeles as they occur.
In lieu of traditional banding, an alternative banding procedure may be employed as a result of a special study sanctioned by the Department of Human Resources, consistent with Civil Service Rule 11.01(D).
