    Summary About the Position: This position is located at the Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point, NC, 596th U.S. Army Transportation Brigade (Ammunition), Directorate of Public Works (DPW), Maintenance of Way (MOW) Division. The primary purpose of this position is to plan and carry out an itinerary of periodic inspections that provides maximum coverage of the track systems in the 596th USA Transportation Brigade (Ammunition) area of responsibly (AOR). Responsibilities Prepare track inspection reports identifying necessary corrective action and conduct follow up inspections as appropriate. Completes and signs track inspection records. Investigates railroad accidents and derailments to determine cause. Perform common preventive maintenance and repair duties on standard gauge railroad track, on various railroad equipment, and appurtenances. Assist in the replacement of worn rails, angle bars, switch stands, points, frogs, tongue and mate switches, cross ties, and switch ties. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Railroad Repairer (Motor Vehicle Operator) without more than normal supervision. Must have the ability to perform common preventive maintenance and repair duties on standard gauge railroad track, on various railroad equipment, and appurtenances. I assist in the replacement of worn rails, angle bars, switch stands, points, frogs, tongue and mate switches, cross ties, and switch ties. I can recognize the full range of railway defects, to determine the probable cause of those deficiencies. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Other Than Blueprint Reading) Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Dexterity and Safety Work Practices (Including Keeping Things Neat, Clean, and in Order) Physical Effort: Railroad repairers perform extremely strenuous work for long periods. For example, they frequently lift and carry tools and equipment weighing over 36 kilograms (80 pounds) or exert comparable effort in moving and positioning railroad track components. Their work involves frequent or continuous bending, reaching, pushing, kneeling, lifting, and similar body and limb movement. Working Conditions: Railroad repairers typically work outside, often in seasonal temperature and weather extremes and are subject to the following conditions: loud machinery noises; possible burns from hot equipment; fumes from creosote, insect sprays, and smoke; falls from hazardous footing; dirt, cuts, and grease or oil; insect bites; and possible injuries from handling equipment. They may wear protective gloves, hard-toe shoes, safety glasses, and similar protective devices, some of which may be uncomfortable and worn for long periods. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year probationary period may be required. Direct deposit of pay is required. This is a Logistics Career Field position. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.
