    The Department of Perioperative Services at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is seeking a Full-Time Perioperative Safety and Management Fellow:

    Summary:

    + This role is a clinical career trajectory that includes administration and/or management in perioperative services. This is a full-time position with a commitment of at least 12 months.

    + Responsible for the hands-on investigation, analysis, and process improvement plan for all significant patient quality and safety issues in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative (PACU) areas. HUP perioperative services encompasses 40 operating rooms (inpatient and outpatient) and 10 endoscopy rooms, performing over 60,000 procedures annually. Graded supervision is provided by dedicated on site faculty and staff from surgery, anesthesia and nursing with special experience and knowledge in safety, quality, and perioperative patient care. The structured curriculum, developed and taught by Penn faculty, includes readings, seminars, training, and projects designed to educate fellows regarding (inter alia): clinical errors and human factors engineering, root cause analysis, process improvement, measurement of clinical quality, six sigma, team training, in-situ simulation and change management. Fellows are also intimately involved in other important aspects of perioperative management including supply chain, scheduling, personnel, materials management and clinical engineering.

    Responsibilities:

    + Works diligently to safeguard all sensitive information from unauthorized disclosure, particularly information about patients and their caregivers.

    + Demonstrates concern for co-workers by responding quickly to requests for assistance and providing follow-up on outstanding issues.

    + Sensitive to discussion of provider or patient-related data in public areas or in a non-work related setting.

    + HIPAA & JCAHO compliance

    + The PeriOp Safety Fellows will actively participate in and become proficient in the following goals and objectives:

    + Appropriate methods and collection of data in support of PeriOp safety issues

    + Appropriate uses of data analytics targeted for the above issues

    + Appropriate preventative measures used to avoid such safety issues

    + Essentials of investigations relevant to safety questions in PeriOp space

    + Principles of process improvement on multiple topics

    + Core Values:

    Credentials:

    + CRNA or CRNP or MD or PA-C or RN (Required)

    + Physician candidates must have completed 2 years of training in an ACGME approved program (Required)

    Education or Equivalent Experience:

    + Bachelor of Arts or Science (Required)

    + 5+ years Nursing and APP candidates must have at least a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years work experience, including 2 years in a perioperative area (OR, pre-op, PACU). Operating room experience.

    Additional Information:

    Applicants should envision a clinical career trajectory that would include administration and/or management in perioperative services and/or patient safety/quality. Most competitive candidates will likely come from anesthesia (includes CRNA), surgery, nursing, and/or advanced practice providers (APP). Operating room experience is mandatory. Prior to interview non-physician applicants must send a letter of support from the director of OR nursing or the OR director of their hospital. Salary and benefits are commensurate with level of training and experience.
