The Medical Assistant Intern position is available to qualified Proxima scholars to provide hands-on clinical experience and exposure to the essential functions and daily responsibilities of a medical assistant within a dynamic healthcare system. This position is a paid temporary role with a duration of up to 12 weeks. The Medical Assistant Intern works under the licensed healthcare staff to deliver safe, high-quality, and compassionate care to patients. The role supports department-based teams and contributes to the overall care experience through fundamental patient care activities. Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of licensed health care staff, the Medical Assistant Intern will:
+ Perform basic clinical duties such as rooming patients, taking vital signs, and assisting with examinations and procedures under the direction of licensed providers.
+ Document patient information in the electronic medical record in accordance with clinic protocols and regulatory requirements.
+ Support patient flow and schedule efficiency by preparing exam rooms, restocking supplies, and coordinating care tasks.
+ Provide patient education and instruction as directed by the provider or licensed staff.
+ Assist in collecting and processing specimens, performing point-of-care testing, and managing clinical equipment.
+ Collaborate with nurses, physicians, and administrative staff to ensure seamless patient care delivery.
+ Demonstrate accountability, professionalism, and engagement in learning throughout the duration of the training program.
+ May perform patient phlebotomy in accordance with clinic procedures and physician orders after specialized training.
+ May apply leads and monitors for diagnostic procedures such as EKG and ultrasound scan under the direct supervision of licensed personnel.
+ May perform other duties based on department assigned.
+ May be scheduled for day, evening, weekend, or holiday shifts, based on unit needs.

+ Demonstrated ability to use a multi-line phone system and utilize hospital paging system as needed.
+ Ability to initiate appropriate action in emergency/crisis situations which require the incumbent to evaluate the crisis and determine what the protocol is for each situation.
Qualifications
Qualifications** **Licenses Required
+ Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
+ **Verifiable completion of one (1) of the following:**
+ State approved EMT course.
+ One (1) year of Medical Assistant experience in an ambulatory care clinic or other healthcare setting.
+ Medical Assisting education program.
+ University Hospital Medical Assistant certification program.

_Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation._
+ This position involves intermediate working conditions in a healthcare setting that may exert up to 50 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving patients or objects, such as medical equipment, while providing patient care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients. Incumbents face exposure to potentially dangerous contaminated bodily fluids, blood, used needles, and other contaminants as part of the daily hazards of the job.
