SENIOR MECHANIC (MAINTENANCE), Nuclear Reactor Laboratory, demonstrates a high degree of skill in the repair of a wide variety of machinery and equipment, such as automotive, airplane, and other engines and machines; completely overhauls and repairs such machines, operates and tunes them to obtain the best operating conditions; assembles and constructs laboratory apparatus; responsible for the installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of mechanical systems and equipment within the Nuclear Reactor Laboratory including support for the Irradiation Engineering Group such as pumps, valves and other mechanical components found in fluid and air systems; follow industrial safety practices and embrace a safety culture; adhere to radiation protection measures and exercise sound radiological control judgment while working in areas containing radioactive materials; report any concerns and abnormal system behavior to shift supervisor and superintendent immediately; install, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair mechanical equipment such as pumps, valves, piping systems, and rotating machinery; perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on mechanical systems; and read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, and drawings for proper equipment setup and troubleshooting.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: Graduation from a two-year day technical school or its equivalent and a minimum of five (5) years of applicable experience; familiarity with mechanical tools, equipment, and diagnostic instruments; English language fluency (written and oral); and ability to work both independently and as part of a team; strong troubleshooting skills and attention to detail. PREFERRED: Four years of experience in maintenance and repair of mechanical systems within a nuclear environment; technical degree or certification in mechanical technology such as Navy nuclear education; and knowledge of nuclear safety standards, regulations, and procedures.
Must have U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status.
Must complete FBI background checks every 5 years for regulatory compliance and approved by the Nuclear Reactor Lab reviewing official for unescorted reactor access and safeguards information.
Working Conditions: Ability to lift weights of up to 40 pounds; ascend/descend ladders and remain on one’s feet for a prolonged period; and ability to work in confined spaces and at heights.
