    General Statement of Duties

     

    Eugene Public Library is seeking a passionate, collaborative, public-service oriented person to work on the Custodial Team

    Library Custodian performs a variety of building support functions for downtown library (with occasional duties at one of the two branch libraries):

    + Janitorial service (including public restrooms)

    + Minor building maintenance tasks

    + Occasional minor general repairs in support of staff and library visitors.

     

    Custodians are valued members of the library team in delivering excellent customer service to the community, including vulnerable populations. The successful candidate will respond to requests from co-workers and library visitors respectfully. Also, know that all library staff are expected to participate in library’s efforts related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and access.

    Eugene Public Library is part of the City of Eugene's Library, Recreation & Cultural Services Department. Excellence in action is observed every day in Eugene’s Public Library Division. This team is amazing and dedicated to building a better and stronger community.

     

    The community is served at three locations – Downtown, Bethel and Sheldon. Serving over 3,000 visitors each day, the Downtown Library is an anchor in downtown Eugene. The Bethel and Sheldon Branch Libraries are vital to accessible service delivery for community members in underserved parts of the city.

    Examples of Duties Performed - Duties may include but are not limited to the following

     

    + Shares responsibility for providing clean and safe facilities for city staff, volunteers, and the general public.

    + Performs janitorial duties such as cleaning heavily used public restrooms, multiple times a day; emptying trash cans; and vacuuming or mopping floors.

    + Picks up and delivers supplies and equipment; arranges tables, chairs, video and audio equipment for meetings.

    + Performs limited building maintenance, repair, and graffiti removal tasks, including power washing. Reports needed building maintenance repair and reports hazardous conditions or safety problems.

    + Actively supports and respects diversity in the workplace and helps create a supportive workplace for all employees.

    + Communicates with colleagues using Microsoft Windows and Outlook on a daily basis.

    + Utilize a City vehicle to deliver supplies between various library locations.

    + Actively supports and respects diversity in the workplace.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Experience

    Six months work experience demonstrating courteous customer service, significant public interaction, and working effectively with co-workers and in work teams.

     

    Cleaning or minor maintenance and upkeep of work area is desirable.

     

    Background

     

    Must pass a background check.

     

    Physical

     

    Must pass a physical assessment and drug test.

     

    License

     

    Valid Oregon driver’s license (or the ability to obtain by date of hire); must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City’s standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355).

     

    The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities

     

    Knowledge

     

    + Use of common cleaning products, materials, equipment, and other supplies needed to perform janitorial and minor building maintenance.

    + Identify occupational hazards and use of proper safety precautions and processes.

    + Provide kind and respectful customer service to a diverse group of co-workers and library visitors

    + Knowledge of spoken and written English sufficient to understand product labels and instructions. (Does not have to be native English speaker)

     

    Skills and Abilities

     

    + Perform and prioritize assigned custodial tasks independently by following oral and written instructions regarding established routines and guidelines; and assist co-workers as needed.

    + Perform minor repairs and maintenance of building fixtures using hand and power tools.

    + Properly research safety data sheets online to determine appropriate safety precautions.

    + Bring your best self to work daily; maintain respectful and effective staff and public relations; communicate tactfully and respectfully, both orally and in writing with the public, coworkers, and supervisors.

    + Work effectively as a member of a team with flexibility, positive attitude, and effective communication.

    + Work in a fast-paced environment, paying close attention to detail, using time efficiently, accurately performing multiple tasks with frequent interruptions, and adapting to changing priorities.

    + Effectively work independently and supportively as part of a team in a shared workspace.

    + Display sensitivity toward, and acceptance of, particular needs and interests of a diverse population.

    Supplemental Information

     

    Working Conditions

     

    Work in this class is done generally in an office environment. Some assignments may include working outdoors. Requires constant standing and walking with frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, and twisting. Constant use of hands and arms and may require overhead reaching. Frequently required to lift up to 35 pounds, occasional lifting up to 36-60 lbs. Work includes operating a variety of tools and equipment that may require additional and advanced training. Exposure to moving equipment, dust fumes, electric shock, toxic/caustic chemicals and biological hazards. Duties may be performed in a closed facility and/or around the public and during public events. Required to work around and respond to difficult and confrontational situations and individuals. May require working at heights. Safety equipment, including shoes, gloves and eye protection are required.

     

    Bilingual Pay Benefit

     

    Per the AFSCME contract (https://www.eugene-or.gov/Archive.aspx?AMID=71) , the City shall pay an employee an additional 5% for a required intermediate or advanced level competency. To qualify for bilingual pay, the employee must have demonstrated fluency in the required language and successfully pass a fluency examination administered by the City's Employee Resource Center division.

    What to Expect from our Selection Process

    The normal starting salary is the first step shown on the posting. Other placement in the salary range may be considered depending on qualifications and experience.
