    Shift: Monday- Thursday (7:00am - 4:30pm), Friday (7:00am - 12:00pm)

     

    Job Summary: Under the supervision and direction of an Ophthalmologist the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant assists the physician and other technical support personnel in evaluation of eye problems and setup for procedures.

     

    Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED.

     

    Licensure, Registration and/or Certification: Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).

     

    Work Experience: 1 - 2 years of related experience.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.

     

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Performs preliminary screening examinations for physician review including but not limited to determination of chief complaint and medical history, visual acuity distance and near extraocular motility, confrontation visual fields, pupil examination, refractometry, Goldman and tonopen tonometry, Schirmer's tear testing, Ishihara color testing, stereo vision testing, and eye dominance determination. Administer diagnostic eye drops as needed. Examines the cornea, lens and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and note variations from normal. Performs testing inclusive of: humphrey automated central and peripheral visual fields; corneal topography; wavefront analysis, Ocular Coherence Tomography, DGH pachymetry, humphrey biometer and IOL master. Cleans and stocks consultation room and surgery room with drugs and other supplies. Orders supplies and treatment cards for use with lasers utilizing systems. Sterilizes and sets up instruments for ophthalmic surgical procedures, assists with minor office surgery, and laser treatments as required. Prepares charts for daily appointments, directs the flow of patients examined by an Eye Center physician; act as scribe for physician by recording examination data and provides support and education to patient as directed by physician. Aware of coding and compliance issues and follows guidelines for charting, examination protocols, and also protects patient privacy as dictated by HIPPA regulations.

     

    Decision Making: Independent judgment in planning sequence of operations and making minor decisions in a complex technical or professional field.

     

    Working Relationships: Works directly with patients and/or customers. Works with internal customers via telephone or face to face interaction. Works with external customers via telephone or face to face interaction. Works with other healthcare professionals and staff. Works frequently with individuals at Director level or above.
