Our client, a global leader in semiconductor and display materials, is seeking an Augmented Reality Principal Optical Design Engineer to join their team. As an Optical Design Engineer, you will be part of the AR/SmartGlasses initiative supporting the Optical Engineering and Computational Design teams. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and excellent communication skills, which will align successfully in the organization.

**Job Title:** Principal Optical Design Engineer – AR/SmartGlasses

**Location:** San Jose, CA

**Pay Range:** $70 – $132/hr (depending on experience)

What’s the Job?

• Design and develop polarization volume hologram (PVH) waveguides, optimizing KPIs and performance trade-offs.

• Create optical designs that balance device performance with user experience for AR applications.

• Analyze how materials, processes, and architectural changes impact waveguide and device performance.

• Drive closed-loop optical data analysis to align optical models with experimental results.

• Collaborate with computational, metrology, and integration teams to refine design capabilities and understand device fundamentals.

What’s Needed?

• Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, or related field.

• 4+ years of industry experience designing AR-related technologies and diffractive waveguides.

• Experience with optical modeling tools (RCWA, FDTD, ray-tracing) and software (VirtualLab, Zemax, Lumerical, etc.).

• Strong understanding of AR device architecture, optical characterization methods, and color/perceptual science.

• Excellent communication skills and willingness to innovate and push boundaries in AR modeling.
