Job Summary
Plainsboro Township is seeking a qualified and highly motivated individual for the position of Fire
Prevention Inspector. This critical role is responsible for enforcing the NJ Uniform Fire Code to ensure the
health, safety, and welfare of occupants and the general public. The Inspector conducts inspections, responds
to complaints, documents violations accurately, and follows up on corrective actions. This position requires
substantial independence and the ability to interpret and apply complex state and local regulations.
Key responsibilities (Essential Functions)
This position involves working in a moderately busy office environment with frequent interactions with the
public. The employee will handle sensitive information, including confidential personnel and client records.
The Fire Prevention Inspector will perform the following essential duties:
• Code Enforcement & Interpretation: Understand, interpret, and effectively enforce the NJ Uniform
Fire Code.
• Property Inspections:
o Conduct scheduled fire inspections for commercial properties.
• Violation Documentation & Follow-up: Prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports
detailing findings and conclusions. Issue violation notices and conduct re-inspections to ensure
compliance.
• Public Interaction: Respond to complaints, conferring with property owners/managers in a courteous,
educational, and effective manner to resolve inspection problems and address non-compliance.
• Reporting & Administration: Maintain comprehensive records, inform the supervisor/proper
departments of observed violations, and attend training to maintain required state certifications.
• Work Schedule: Must be available to work beyond normal business hours during busy periods to
ensure thorough completion of inspections.
Required Qualifications
Education and Experience
• One to three (1-3) years of experience in fire prevention, code enforcement, building inspections,
building repair, maintenance, construction, and/or office work concerned with building structures
and/or repair; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements (Certifications)
Candidates must possess the following certifications and license:
• Fire Inspector Certification issued by the NJ Department of Community Affairs.
• A valid New Jersey Driver’s License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Thorough knowledge of the Uniform Fire Code.
• Skill in using various tools associated with fire inspections.
• Effective communication skills (in person, on the telephone, and in writing) with the public, property
owners/managers, and other departments.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, maintain records and prepare
reports and interact with business owners/tenants in a tactful and professional manner.
