Job Summary
The Director of Accounting and Compliance provides operational leadership for the YMCA of Greater Seattle’s accounting activities, cash and treasury operations, audit execution, and internal controls. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, high-quality audit support, and strong day-to-day processes that uphold the financial integrity of the association. Reporting to the Vice President of Finance and Accounting, the Director supervises the Accounting Specialist, Association Administration Director, and Staff Accountant. The position partners closely with Accounting, Revenue, FP&A, branch leadership, and program teams to support timely close, smooth audits, and consistent compliance practices. Hiring Range: $85,000 - $103,000/year
Responsibilities
Operational Accounting Leadership
• Oversee daily accounting operations and ensure accurate, timely completion of month-end and year-end close processes.
• Maintain audit-ready documentation for general ledger accounts, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial schedules.
• Provide guidance to staff on accounting policies, fund accounting standards, and internal control practices.
• Support accurate revenue recognition and fund accounting in partnership with the Senior Director of Revenue & A/R and FP&A.
Audit Coordination and Compliance
• Manage annual external audit and single audit fieldwork, including scheduling, auditor communication, and preparation of deliverables.
• Maintain the compliance calendar for audits, tax filings, certifications, and regulatory deadlines.
• Coordinate PBC items and collaborate with staff to ensure accurate, well-documented submissions.
• Partner with the Senior Director of Revenue & A/R on revenue-related audit schedules, compliance documentation, and revenue-recognition considerations.
• Serve as a primary contact for auditors and grantor desk reviews; support corrective action plans and process improvements.
• Contribute to the preparation of Form 990 and other compliance filings.
Treasury and Cash Management
• Oversee daily cash management activities, including reconciliations, investment and borrowing administration, and short-term cash forecasting.
• Maintain treasury-related controls, including investment policy, cash handling guidelines, and wire transfer safeguards.
• Support management of banking relationships, including signatory administration and related cash management configurations.
• Promote strong cash stewardship and timely escalation of treasury-related risks.
Asset Accounting and Branch Administration
• Oversee the full lifecycle of capital assets, including project accounting, additions, disposals, depreciation, and impairment considerations.
• Review and approve asset reconciliations and prepare audit schedules related to fixed assets and capital projects.
• Provide leadership to the Association Administration Director to promote consistent financial practices across branches.
• Maintain branch internal controls, escalation paths, and guidance on receivables management and write-off thresholds.
• Support branch administrative capability through training, standardized guidance, and consistent practices.
Policy, Process, and Systems Support
• Maintain and apply accounting policies established by Finance leadership and ensure related processes are well documented and accessible.
• Serve as operational lead for relevant ERP modules and support system improvements that enhance accounting accuracy, internal controls, and efficiency.
• Drive simplification, automation, and improved visibility through dashboards and reporting enhancements.
Other Duties
• Recruit, supervise, and develop staff with a focus on accuracy, compliance, and service to program partners.
• Promote collaboration across Treasury, General Ledger, and Asset Accounting functions.
• Assumes additional responsibilities as needed to support the mission and operational needs of the YMCA.
• Partner with VP Finance, FP&A, Revenue, and program teams on accounting questions, fund coding needs, and compliance considerations.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. CPA, CMA, or related credential preferred.
• Minimum 5 years’ progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years supervising staff.
• Experience supporting external audits, single audits, and preparation of Form 990.
• Strong treasury or cash management experience preferred.
• Knowledge of asset accounting, capital project reporting, and fund accounting.
• Experience with ERPs and revenue systems such as NetSuite, Traction Rec, or Raiser’s Edge preferred.
• Strong Excel skills, attention to detail, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience working in a nonprofit, human services, or grant-funded environment is strongly preferred, and familiarity with nonprofit cost allocation and fund accounting practices.
• Comfort working in a matrixed environment with both branch operations and administrative departments.
• Knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.).
• Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Role may require standing, walking, squatting, sitting, typing, bending, reaching, twisting, repetitive hand movements, and driving.
• Hearing must be adequate to perform job duties in person, over the telephone, and in virtual meetings.
• Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently in person, over the telephone, and in virtual meetings.
• Visual acuity must be adequate to perform job duties, including visual examination of information from printed sources and computer screens.
• Must be able to remain stationary in a sitting or standing position up to 95% of the time.
REGULAR WORKING CONDITIONS
• The regular weekly schedule for this position will be as follows: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM PST - 5:00 PM PST
• Position may occasionally require some evenings or weekends to meet job requirements.
