The City of Durham, North Carolina, Department of Water Management, is seeking an Assistant Superintendent at our South Durham Water Reclamation Facility located at 6605 Farrington Road, Chapel Hill. The South Durham Water Treatment Facility has a nominal daily flow of 11 MGD, wet weather peak flows of approximately 50 MG.
The Assistant Superintendent is devoted to the management oversight of water and wastewater treatment operations. As assigned, will lead and supervise the daily and tactical operations of treatment plant maintenance and operations.
Responsible for ensuring preventative, predictive and emergency maintenance is performed at the facility; implementing work plans; assisting with budget preparation and monitoring and approving expenditures; overseeing performance management activities; managing equipment acquisition; directing safety programs; participating in the management of construction, maintenance, and repair projects; and assisting the Superintendent with management of the Division.
Supervises support staff including conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training, and implementing hiring, discipline, and termination procedures.
Duties/Responsibilities
+ Supervises treatment plant staff, including planning, assigning, evaluating work and training; plans and implements process improvements; ensures preventative, predictive, and emergency maintenance is performed on assigned facilities and equipment; convenes and facilitates meetings; and ensures compliance with applicable safety and operational regulations, policies, and procedures.
+ Assists with budget preparation; manages equipment acquisition; monitors and assists with approving expenditures; researches and analyzes product, price, vendor, and other financial and operational information; prepares cost estimates; inspects inventory levels and equipment to determine purchase, repair, or replacement requirements; and makes budget and purchasing recommendations.
+ Prepares, oversees the preparation of, reports, memos, plans, presentations, records, and other documentation; oversees the maintenance of databases and online systems; researches and analyzes information; reports findings and makes recommendations; and reviews work and the work of others for accuracy, completeness and compliance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
+ Collaborates with higher-level staff, contractors, the public, and other City departments, and/or external agencies; attends meetings and workshops; assists with managing department operations and developing department goals and policies; responds to inquiries and concerns; prepares and conducts presentation; provides technical assistance; and/or coordinates and facilitates projects.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
+ Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, in water resources, environmental science, engineering, or a directly related field
+ Five years of related experience.
+ North Carolina Grade IV Biological Operator Certification
