JOB SUMMARY
Director of Design is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing design plans for real estate and facility projects for Baylor Scott and White Health (BSWH). Designs and implements solutions to meet facility design objectives and building specifications. Plans, monitors, and manages design projects from initiation through completion. Identifies and utilizes formal design process and tools to manage resources, risks, changes, and budget. Monitors design and construction progress to ensure the scope and direction of the design projects proceed according to schedule. Directs the design of building space allocation and layout. Ensures compliance with established standards, specifications, and budgets. Directs the preparation of design documents (e.g., blueprints, subcontractor agreements, bonding, and licensure). May select, direct, and collaborate with architects, builders, and contractors in the design process.
A division Director translates and implements strategic plans and objectives for area of responsibility. Makes final decisions on operational matters and ensures achievement of objectives. Recommends policies and organizational changes for area. Plans and executes projects and initiatives that meet annual objectives. Erroneous decisions at this level tend to have negative impact on the success of the area, business unit, and possibly the overall organization's operations. Plans and directs the operations of a department or area, with responsibility for staffing, processes, budgets, and costs of the unit. Leads and advises subordinate(s) to meet schedules, resolve technical problems, and monitor performance. Has a larger, more complex organization or functional area than a manager. Often has one or more managers or supervisors reporting to the role.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE
1. Directs real estate design and construction projects for BSWH.
2. Recommends and implements strategic and operational plans and priorities for real estate design and construction, aligned to BSWH overall business objectives.
3. Leads the design and implementation of all aspects of construction projects for BSWH facilities.
4. Determines facility requirements and collaborates with leadership to ensure high standard of design that meets the functional needs of the facility in accordance with the overall real estate master plan for BSWH.
5. Leads the detailed technical review of final construction drawings and specifications within time allotted by the construction schedule.
6. Develops and established design and construction policies, procedures, and practices that ensure the quality completion of safe and functional facilities.
7. Solicits, reviews, and selects bids for construction projects that meet design requirements within established guidelines.
8. Negotiates and monitors the contracted work of outside vendors and contractors during all phases of the construction projects.
9. Leads the definition of construction and renovation project scopes, communicating with all facilities, leadership, and stakeholders throughout all phases of construction.
10. Ensures that projects proceed in a timely, accurate, and cost-efficient manner and resolves issues and recommends corrective actions and solutions as needed.
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS
1. Bachelor’s degree in architecture, real estate, or related field preferred.
2. 5+ years of experience in facilities design, construction, renovation, and project management.
3. 1+ years of experience in a leadership role.
4. Experience with design and construction of hospital, clinic, and medical facilities preferred.
5. Experience with real estate budget development, space utilization, and project management.
6. Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
7. Collaboration and relationship building skills at all levels of the organization.
8. Detailed oriented and analytical.
