Summary This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief of Operations, Executive Director of Facilities Operations, Supreme Court Buildings and Grounds, Operations and Maintenance Division, Maintenance Branch, Night. The ideal candidate will perform journey-level maintenance mechanic duties in the repair of masonry, painting, plastering and carpentry work. Responsibilities Tour of Duty: Day Shift: 7:30 pm to 6:00 am Monday - Thursday. Work may include holidays and weekends on a regular and reoccurring basis. Hours may change due to Operational Needs of Management **The incumbent of this position is designated as "Emergency/Essential" and will be required to report to work during emergencies and inclement weather conditions.** To qualify for this position, you must have journey level experience in at least three of the following areas: Masonry, Painting, Plaster or Carpentry work. Journey Level Experience should clearly be reflected in the applicant's resume to make an appropriate determination. Your resume should list your work experience including job title, explanation of journey level duties and employment dates (month/year). DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: MASON Performs decorative stone, marble, granite and brick work. Repairs and maintains stone and brick joints by cleaning, cutting, raking and repointing with mortar and caulking compound. Mixes color toned mortar to match the color of the existing mortar. Take care to match the color and texture of all materials worked. Lays brick and block. Set stone and other materials on walls and partitions. Matches, cuts, cleans and polishes bluestone, flagstone, granite, limestone, marble, sandstone and terra cotta. Repairs damaged marble cornices. Cut and replace metal hangers. Remounts, levels and points joints. Repairs and re-sets marble molding around doorways. When making repairs, locates matching materials and removes and replaces marble panels. PAINTING AND PLASTERING Performs maintenance and repair on unique and historically significant plaster walls, ceilings, cornices and moldings. Removes old paint from interior and exterior walls, doors, baseboards, floors, baseboards, floors, and trim. Scrapes, sandpapers or applies paint remover as needed to prepare surfaces for refinishing. Tapes, mortars or applies topping cement to joints between dry-wall board sheets to fill joints and nail heads and bring joints into smooth, even planes. Smooth surfaces by wet brushing and sanding. Applies plaster to walls and ceilings by spreading and smoothing plaster over laths with trowel. Applies decorative plaster in ornate and patterned finishes to exactly match the previous finish. Uses trowels, float, screed, plasterers hawk, straight edge and personally devised tools as appropriate. Applies two-coat plaster. Installs metal lath and applies exterior plaster. Applies striping, stippling, graining and gold highlights on trim moldings. CARPENTRY Interpret complex instructions, blueprints, sketches and building code and use advanced shop mathematics to calculate measurements and dimensions to produce finished products with precise fits and accurate dimensions. Determines the grade, size and type of lumber and materials required to complete carpentry project. Determines the layout and work sequences required to complete carpentry jobs. Performs journey level tasks with metal lath plastering, blockwork, framing with metal studs, installing locks and elaborate wooden molding and/or trim work. Installs hollow metal doors, frames and hardware plumb and level. Adjust door height and width. Reverse the egress of metal doors and/or install new doors. Installs or replaces interior partitions, flooring, panels, suspended ceilings and counter tops. Works from complete designs or sketches, to build concrete forms, (foundations, columns; wall forms beams, girders, catch basins, stairway, floor systems, stairways, walls, one-way joist construction, one-way slabs, two-way joist construction, waffle slab construction, curtain walls, composite constructions, boxed headers and beams. Beam girder framing, bolster beam and slabs, conductive flooring, composite flooring, dropped girders, grade beams, haunches, key-ways, L-beams and mushroom wales, sump holes). Utilizes knowledge of and complies with applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Office of Congressional Workplace Rights, and AOC rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner. Provides or receives training, either on-the-job or through classroom training, to ensure that all safety practices and equipment are fully utilized. Uses required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as appropriate. Requirements Conditions of Employment You must be able to pass a drug test.
