    Job Description

    The New York City Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) works every day to implement the city’s Human Rights Law through enforcement, education, and outreach. The Commission seeks to address historic and contemporary inequities to cultivate a city where everyone can live, work, and thrive free from discrimination.

     

    Through training, education, and policy initiatives, the Commission aims to root out discrimination. The Commission proactively identifies patterns of discrimination through testing employers, housing providers, and providers of public accommodation. The Commission also uses investigations, litigation, and other enforcement tools to address allegations of discrimination.

     

    The Commission is seeking to hire a highly qualified Lead Advisor on Gender Identity, Expression, and Sexual orientation with expertise in engaging diverse and vulnerable communities across New York City. The lead advisor will be responsible for developing and implementing outreach strategies, partnerships, and public education initiatives that advance equity, visibility, and inclusion for LGBTQ+ communities.

     

    The Lead Advisor will play a role in promoting understanding and compliance with protections related to gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation across NYC to fulfill the mission of making NYC a place where people live, work, and thrive free from discrimination.

     

    The position reports to the Director of Outreach and Training and will work closely with the leadership in the Community Relations Bureau and help shape the Bureau's strategic vision.

    Key Responsibilities:

    - Develop, coordinate, and implement outreach strategies that effectively engage LGBTQ+ communities, and other historically marginalized communities.

     

    - Serve as the agency’s internal subject matter expert on gender identity, expression and sexual orientation, providing guidance on inclusive practices and policy interpretation.

     

    - Build and maintain partnerships with community-based organizations, advocacy groups, and other stakeholders to promote awareness of the NYC Human Rights Law.

     

    - Promote, coordinate and facilitate workshops, trainings, and presentations on the NYC Human Rights Law and specifically on protections related to gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. Participate in interagency working groups and taskforces, as needed by the agency.

     

    - Provide support to Directors and CRB Management with community engagement strategies, event planning, and responses to emerging issues within the portfolio.

     

    - Coordinate response to incidents of bias and hate on basis of gender identity, expression and sexual orientation, ensuring timely and appropriate follow-up

     

    - Conduct training and public forums on additional topics as needed.

     

    - Create and implement strategic plans for engagement with communities in portfolio annually and be able to pivot under unanticipated changes.

     

    - Plan and implement regular public events focused on the portfolio around commemorative days, like, TDOR, TDOV, NCOD, Pride, etc.

     

    - Prepare and submit reports according to agency reporting standards., summarizing outreach activities, event outcomes, and community partnerships.

     

    - Demonstrated ability to develop practical solutions to broad, complex issues.

     

    - Discretion in handling sensitive and confidential matters.

     

    - May need to supervise interns, fellows or volunteers.

     

    - Perform other special projects and manage community relations initiatives as required

    Qualifications

    1. A baccalaureate degree issued after completion of a four-year course in an accredited college or university and six (6) years of appropriate , full-time experience gained in such fields as in intergroup relations *; community relations; civil rights law enforcement; block or tenant organizing; investigations related to law enforcement; labor or industrial relations; education; social work; or law; of which two (2) years must have been in a progressively responsible supervisory or administrative capacity.

    2.A satisfactory equivalent; or

    *One (1) year of full-time intergroup relations experience will be accepted in lieu of one (1) year supervisory or administrative experience.

    * "Intergroup relations" is defined as experience in which the employee's major responsibility is to facilitate communication and cooperation, and mediate tensions between different groups.
