DHA serves Nashville and Davidson County. The mission of MDHA is to create quality affordable housing opportunities, support neighborhoods, strengthen communities, and help build a greater Nashville.
MDHA employs over 300 staff members, has a budget of $200 million, and houses approximately 30,000 people, primarily through nearly 8,000 Section 8 Vouchers and over 6,800 apartments, which are mainly Project-Based Rental Assistance (PBRA) units, at 39 properties. MDHA is a housing authority, a community development agency, and a redevelopment agency.
Position Summary
Paralegal provides professional legal and administrative support to the General Counsel and agency leadership, with a focus on contracts, real estate, compliance, and litigation support. The position assists with legal research, document drafting, case management, and coordination with internal departments and external counsel.
Typical Duties
Key Duties and Responsibilities
+ Conduct legal and factual research related to contracts, procurement, real estate, employment, fair housing, and other agency matters.
+ Draft, format, and proofread legal documents, including correspondence, contracts, pleadings, motions, discovery responses, and memoranda for attorney review.
+ Maintain case and matter files, track deadlines, manage electronic and paper document management systems, and prepare indexes and summaries.
+ Assist with public record responses, subpoenas, and discovery, including document collection, review for responsiveness, and basic privilege/redaction tagging under attorney direction.
+ Coordinate with internal departments to gather information and documentation needed for legal matters, investigations, and audits.
+ Support litigation and administrative proceedings by organizing exhibits, preparing witness files, and assisting attorneys before hearings, mediations, and trials.
+ Assist with contract and policy tracking, including maintaining logs, monitoring expiration/renewal dates, and updating standard templates as directed.
+ Review and process department billing, maintain the matter management system, department reports, and department databases.
+ Prepare routine correspondence and status reports to staff, outside counsel, and external agencies, clearing paralegal status and not providing legal advice.
+ Perform intake and initial information-gathering for some issues, including complaints, incident reports, and requests for residents' reasonable accommodation, for attorney review.
+ Perform other related duties as assigned by the General Counsel or designee.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate's degree in paralegal or legal assistance studies. Bachelor's degree preferred. Minimum 3-5 years of progressive paralegal experience.

Technical experience
+ Working knowledge of legal terminology, civil procedures, and standard formats for pleadings, contracts, and correspondence.
+ Familiarity with fair housing policies and practices, real estate, administrative, or public law, or willingness to learn these areas quickly.

+ Willingness, mental and physical ability to perform the duties involved in this classification.
+ The ability to perform work with or without accommodation requires the ability to sit, stand, and walk; dexterity of the hands; clarity of vision, speech, and hearing.
+ The power of observation, and other physical duties as required.
Software Management
Skilled in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft software.
