    _$3,000 recruitment incentive for eligible new employees joining the UW Medicine team._

    Who we’re looking for:

    The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a **Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) 2** with the **Genetics & Solid Tumors Lab** at the University of Washington Medical Center – Montlake.

     

    The CLT 2 plays a critical role in specimen processing and laboratory operations within the Genetics & Solid Tumors Lab. In this position, you will handle complex tasks such as receiving and accessioning biological samples, maintaining specimen integrity, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to navigate multiple laboratory information systems while collaborating effectively with healthcare providers and team members to support accurate and timely diagnostic testing.

    What you’ll contribute:

    General Duties

    + Perform specimen processing, consisting of receiving, sorting, identifying, accessioning, and labeling blood, saliva, bone marrow, tissue, and other biological specimens. Enter patient and specimen information into logbooks and laboratory computer systems and databases. Enter data into spreadsheets, and create and edit Word documents, tables, and graphs. Navigate various database online records (Sunquest, CARS, EPIC, Beaker, GreenLIMS, HC1, and other electronic databases) to locate and track patient samples **.**

    + Match specimens against requisitions, reports, and batch lists; resolve discrepancies, ensuring accurate documentation. Archive, store, and return specimens as required, following proper specimen transport regulations, packaging protocols, and completion of all necessary forms. Maintain specimen integrity through procurement, processing, and storage; identify compromised samples and take corrective action.

    + Combine and/or cancel orders as appropriate and use correct cancellation codes. Assure credit/QA documentation is completed.

    + Audit paperwork, databases, and workflows to ensure accuracy, compliance, and quality assurance.

    + Perform problem resolution and troubleshooting, including communicating problems promptly to coworkers and leadership; document non-conforming events properly and maintain neat, organized, and legible records.

    + Establish priorities of work to be done accurately. Adapt to changes as necessary and as directed by the Lead. Ask for help when falling behind because of heavier than normal workloads. Help others or work on other assigned projects when tasks are completed.

    + Correctly store and transport specimens including send-outs, following all rules and regulations regarding the preparation and processing of samples for transport and/or testing, filling out the appropriate forms and packaging specimens and slides for send-out.

    + Use excellent customer service skills and the ability to work with health care providers in a professional manner and remain calm when answering calls from providers under challenging circumstances. Troubleshoot calls and transfer calls to technologists and laboratory directors when appropriate. Form productive working relationships with all co-workers throughout the organization.

    + Use critical thinking skills to respond to new situations and make decisions based on written policies, requesting assistance as appropriate. Effectively communicate issues to supervisors and directors. Follow established protocols and demonstrate the ability to monitor errors, solve problems, and correctly document, ensuring specimen integrity is maintained throughout all phases of specimen procurement and identify compromised samples.

    + Perform Clinical Laboratory Assistant and Clinical Laboratory Technician 1 responsibilities, as backup or support, when needed.

    Enable Laboratory Operations

    + Manage normal workloads effectively; communicate need for assistance when facing heavier-than-normal workloads; assist others or take initiative to work on assigned projects when assigned tasks are completed. Use work time appropriately.

    + Establish accurate priorities and adapt to workflows based on urgency, deadlines, and laboratory demands.

    + Work as a team member - show initiative and cooperation to maintain workflow.

    + Communicate between team members to facilitate optimal patient care.

    + Maintain awareness of needs within the lab, such as heavy workload on benches or special projects to be completed and assist in the completion of those tasks.

    + Display flexibility in adapting to new routines and modifications of work assignments and schedule.

    + Share responsibility for emergency coverage, overtime and call-back needs of the laboratory.

    + Maintain a neat, clean, and efficient work area including cleaning benches and equipment and replenishing supplies, and informing Leads when inventory is low.

    Teaching Skills/Process Improvement/Quality Control

    + Assist in the development, evaluation, testing, and implementation of new or revised laboratory procedures, technology, and workflow improvement, including interfacing with Pathology and outside organizations.

    + Effectively teach and train new employees or others in the performance of specimen procurement, and provide mentorship to existing employees, as needed.

    + Complete necessary paperwork and training documents during daily interactions with trainees. Review training documents to ensure trainees make satisfactory progress towards completion of training requirements.

    + Verify performance of trainee prior to allowing trainee to work independently.

    + Provide feedback on trainee's performance as required.

    + Perform special projects and related assignments as designated.

    Communication/Customer Service/Collaboration

    + Serve as a laboratory contact for internal and external clients, including UW Pathology, hospital staff, and referral laboratories.

    + Communicate clearly, professionally, and on a timely basis via phone, email, fax, and in person regarding specimen receipt, status, shipping, testing, etc.

    + Remain calm and professional when handling challenging calls or interactions; answer, triage and/or transfer calls with warm handoffs to the appropriate team or director.

    + Work cooperatively with colleagues to maintain workflow and adapt flexibly to changes in schedules and assignments, or laboratories priorities.

    + Promote and contribute to the development of teamwork within Genetics Division and working relationships between Specimen Processing Services, UW Pathology, and other external laboratories and pathology departments.

    Maintain Safe Working Habits

    + Exercise knowledge of laboratory safety and proper precautions when dealing with biohazardous, radioactive, corrosive, explosive and/or flammable materials.

    + Practice "Universal Precautions."

    + Report hazards and unsafe practices to Genetics Safety Officer and/or Laboratory Leadership.

    + Maintain current knowledge of safety procedures, including fire plans, disaster drills, evacuation routes, etc.

    + Know location of safety information and supplies and be able to access such in response to queries or emergency situations.

    + Participate in laboratory disaster preparedness drills.

    What you’ll need:

    High school graduation or equivalent AND two (2) years of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience.

     

    Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

    Desired qualifications:

    + Associate or bachelor’s degree in science.

    + Experience in a major medical hospital laboratory.

    + Experience with a Laboratory Information System (LIS).

    + Experience with pathology LIS (i.e., Epic) and CARs databases.

    + Experience with MacIntosh and Windows personal computers.
