    Description:

    In addition to the functions of the Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Technician, the Laboratory Supervisor has a strong foundation in job knowledge, communications, and operations on which to oversee the general management of the laboratory. The Lab Supervisor will consistently demonstrate positive situational leadership, interpersonal skills, medical staff relations and teamwork.

    Job Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

    + Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technologyor related fieldpreferred.

    + Licensure / Certification: American Society of Clinical Pathologists, or equivalent certificationpreferred.

    + Experience: Minimumof one year internship which includes all areasof the laboratory. Minimum of 5years general laboratory experiencepreferred.

    + Effective communication skills.

    + Ability to work under stress,respond to change, and work independently.

    + Possess a high degree of motivation, organizational ability, and the ability to respond to a changing environment.

    + Able to work all shifts andparticipatein weekend and holiday rotationas needed.

    + Possess a high degree of professionalism andis able toestablish& maintain a good relationship with patients, co-workers & physicians.

    + Leadership experience preferred.

    Job Responsibilities

    _Essential Responsibilities:_

    + **Service Excellence:**

    + **Clinical Practice:**

    + Performs all clinical testing, accurately,timely& efficiently (laboratory & point of care).

    + Reviews andvalidatestest results and follows up with appropriate action.

    + Records & reports test results.

    + Maintains instrumentation by performing calibrations, maintenance, QC & trouble shooting.

    + Operates all laboratory equipment.

    + Performs non-technical tasks and indirect patient care activities as required by the situation. (i.e.) Assisting with transport,outpatient/inpatientspecimen collection, delivery of blood & blood products.

    + Responds appropriately to emergency situations, such as code blue and emergency operations planetc

    + Provides supervision of colleagues in their respective service area, available for 24-hour accountability in addition to the Administrator/CNO

    + **Communication:**

    + Communicates pertinent clinical information toappropriate membersof the patient care team.

    + Maintains positive interpersonal relationships with facility personnel, medical staff, patients & the community.

    + Answers phones promptly and deals with all calls courteously and efficiently.

    + Performs daily rounds with ERand inpatient unitto ensure smooth communication and problem resolution.

    + **Collaboration:**

    + Confers with Registered Nurses and physiciansrelativeto testing availability, specimencollectionand patient preparation.

    + **Education:**

    + Provides patient & family educationrelativeto phlebotomy & expectations related to process.

    + **Safe Practice:**

    + Maintains regulatory compliance.

    + Performs routine scheduled and specialized maintenance of laboratory equipment.

    + Manages an efficient workstation, keeps area clean and stocked with supplies.

    + Follows established guidelines for Risk Management and Organizational Integrity programs and applicable regulatory requirements.

    + Follows testing guidelines, as outlined in policy & procedure manual.

    + Practicesin accordance withInfection Control guidelines and within the guidelines foran environmentalexposure, as outlined in the MSDS.

    + Practices positive patient identification.

    + **Documentation:**

    + Completes all internal & external documentation required by policies, procedures & regulatory guidelines.

    + **Performance Improvement:**

    + Develops,monitors& reports quality indicators for laboratory, focusing on turn-around time, patient outcomes, regulatory compliance & risk management, customer service, and continuous quality and process improvement.

    + Participates in performance improvement process teams.

    + Willingto serve as the facility safety officer.

    + Ensure accuracy in patient charging; responsible for charge error correction.

    + **Computer Skills:**

    + Utilizes computer systemsappropriate toarea effectively.

    + Utilizes internet and intranet appropriately.

    + **Extensive knowledge using Microsoft Word, Excel** , and Outlook.

    + **Initiative:**

    + Demonstrates strong organizational skills and is able to multi-task.

    + Able to recognize a problem following prescribed strategies and make necessary corrections, in the absence of decision rules, will act todeterminea final decision.

    + Teaches laboratory procedures to other Technologists.

    + Responsible for coordinating &monitoringthe workflow of the laboratory to achieve performance measures.

    + Maintains a responsible attitude toward individual performancein accordance withapproved policies & procedures.

    + Responsible forthe meetingindividual education and training requirements.

    + Responsibleto facilitateimprovement in patient care services, staff / physicianrelationshipsand the working climate.

    + Responsible / accountable for professional development,maintaininglicensure and competency.

    + Responsible for own education.

    + Attendsvariousmeetings asrequired.

    + Assistsin maintenance of departmental compliance with continuous regulatory readiness.

    _Other Job Responsibilities:_

    + Responsible for compliance with Organizational Integrity through raising questions and promptly reporting actual or potential wrongdoing.

    + Participates in and coordinates with organizationalprocessto collect and evaluate information abouthazards and safety practices that are used to identify safety management issues. Adheres toestablishedpolicies and procedures, which may includewearing ofpersonal protective equipment.

    + Participates in and fosters a performance improvement approach that includes both intradepartmental and interdepartmental activities.

    + Orders supplies,maintainingdepartment inventory.

    + Manages financial responsibilities of ordering and inventory.

    + In addition to coordinating training and education,assistsin the orientation & training of newcolleagues.

    + Responsible for scheduling of the laboratory staff.

    + Ensuresappropriate laboratorystaffing in all areas during shift of responsibility. Adjusts staffing assignments as needed.

    + Providesinput on new procedures and instrumentation, meets with vendors.

    + Participates in QA projects and activities asappropriate.

    + Serves as a member of the CAP inspection team.

    + Coordinatescompliance with CAP, JCAHO, andother regulatory bodies as needed.

    + Coordinates laboratory technical operations to continuously improve the quality of outputby:reviewing all daily work, quality control, quality assurance, troubleshooting, maintenance, writes policies and procedures, manages inventory of all areas andproficiencytesting.

    + Performs research and development: doingcrossover studies, statistical analysis, methodimplementationand follow-up studies, etc.

    + Attends quarterly Pathology Department meetings.

    + Attends andparticipatesin MountCarmel General Lab, Specimen processing, Trinity Lab Counsel, andMountCarmel Lab director meetings.

    + Reviewsproficiencytesting, policies, and procedures.

    + Serves as a liaison with the Pathologists, clinicalcolleaguesand laboratory staff.

    + Accepts other responsibilities as assigned.

    + Participates in the evaluation process by providing objective and subjective information on applicable staff members.
