    The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Department of Visual and Performing Arts seeks a dynamic musician and educator with a strong background in band directing and music education to be the UVA Wise Director of Bands and Instructor of Music Education. This is a nine-month, non-tenure-track instructor position, with the possibility of the position becoming tenure-track in the future. The successful candidate will begin August 1st, 2026, and will direct the UVA Wise Marching Highland Cavaliers and Highland Cavalier Pep Band, as well as teach courses in music education and their applied instrument area (low brass or clarinet/saxophone preferred). Other courses and ensembles may be assigned based on departmental needs. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, organizational, recruiting, and budget management skills as well as an ability to communicate professionally and clearly with colleagues.

     

    The Director of Bands will coordinate all necessary events and items associated with the UVA Wise athletic bands, including directing the fall semester band camp in August, organizing parades and extra events as applicable, coordinating all staff required for athletic ensemble operations, and managing the endowed fund dedicated to the athletic bands. They will also oversee the UVA Wise wind, percussion, and strings inventory, ensuring proper accountability for instruments on loan, and coordinating the maintenance, repair, and replacement of instruments as needed.

     

    As an Instructor of Music Education, the successful candidate will teach music education courses as a part of their regular course rotation, including Instrumental Survey, Secondary Methods, Classroom Management in Music, Elementary Music Education, and serve as the mentor for any music education students placed in a teaching internship. They will also teach applied lessons and mentor Capstone and Senior Recitals in their instrument area.

     

    The successful candidate will maintain active and positive relationships with area high school band directors and others within the UVA Wise recruiting region; adjudicate and participate in state, regional, and national music organizations; cultivate positive alumni and community relationships; participate in college committee work, and perform other departmental duties as assigned by the VPAR Chair or Music Division Coordinator.

    Required Qualifications

    Master of Music Education (M.M.Ed.) or Master of Music (M.M.)

    Preferred Qualifications

    Doctor of Music Education (Ph.D.) or Doctor of the Musical Arts (D.M.A.)
