    Overview

The Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a dedicatedProgram Coordinator – Safety & Trainingto help ensure a safe, compliant, and supportive work environment for our Parks Maintenance Operations team and other key areas of the department. This role plays a vital part in protecting employees, reducing risk, and strengthening our culture of safety across a wide range of dynamic and hands-on work settings.

     

    In this position, you will take the lead in coordinating high-quality safety and training programs, tracking certifications, supporting incident reporting, and conducting facility inspections—all while collaborating with staff at every level.     Starting Pay:

    New hires start within our entry-to-market range, depending on experience and qualifications.

     

    The starting range for the position is $23.77 - $26.12/hour and will increase each year for longevity and cost of living adjustments.

    Full Pay Range:

    Each position also has a full wage range that reflects potential growth over time, including annual increases for longevity and cost-of-living.

     

    The full range for the position is $23.77 - $27.69/hour.

    Essential Functions

    + Coordinate and execute high standard training programs for employees, including equipment, health, environmental, ergonomics, worksite safety, etc.; track individual employee training completion and certificates.

    + Assist with the urban encampment processes.

    + Submit worker’s compensation claims for Parks Maintenance Operations employees; draft temporary duty assignments for injured employees.

    + Conduct regular safety inspections of Parks Maintenance Operations facilities and other various department facilities, as assigned.

    + Confidentially investigate and track incident reports; retain records and report data to the appropriate supervisors.

    + Maintain inventories of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), safety supplies, and all related records for the Park Maintenance Operations employees, including tracking and dispersing supplies.

    + Provide logistical support for implementation of the safety and training program at Parks and Recreation, including training instructors, sites, materials, attendance, and evaluation of programs.

    + Maintain current safety/training policies, procedures, and practices, including equipment, manuals, and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information.

    + Collect and track fleet records specific to inspections, condition reports, repairs, incidents, GPS units, and recall notices for the Parks Maintenance Operations fleet.

    + Maintain records and track safety complaints and concerns; supply remedies through work orders, trainings, and the distribution of safety supplies.

    + Coordinate and participate in quarterly safety committee meetings for the Parks department; document meeting minutes and agendas.

    + Perform other duties as assigned, based on training and qualifications.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

     

    + Knowledge of the principles and practices of building and grounds maintenance, including the operation of maintenance equipment and vehicles.

    + Knowledge of, and ability to interpret and apply, safety policies, procedures, and guidelines, including OSHA standards and the Montana Safety Culture Act.

    + Skill in utilizing various computer software and databases, including Microsoft 365, and the ability to learn job specific applications and equipment.

    + Skill in managing multiple projects with shifting priorities and timeline demands.

    + Skill in organization, time management and prioritizing with the proven ability to have keen attention to detail and accuracy in performing work with adherence to strict deadlines.

    + Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals.

    + Ability to prepare, maintain, and track various records, reports, and correspondence.

    + Proven ability to assess and mitigate liability risks to ensure safety compliance.

    + Proven ability to train employees and coordinate resources for safety and training purposes.

    + Ability to maintain current knowledge, developments, and trends related to specific area of focus and/or assigned projects.

    + Ability to maintain and exhibit integrity and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.

    + Ability to maintain and foster a culture of professionalism, adhere to departmental and City standards and specifications, and support a positive team environment.

    + Ability to resolve conflicts with facilitating outcomes while maintaining a calm demeanor.

    + Ability to learn and follow City and departmental policies, procedures, and practices.

    Working Conditions:

    + Position requires the ability to lift 50 lbs. or less.

    + Work environment may include occasional exposure to unavoidable weather conditions, occupational hazards, biohazards, blood borne pathogens, sharps, construction hazards, and physical risks, including uneven terrain, loud noises, and high traffic areas, which require following basic safety precautions.

    + Duties may require the ability to access park lands, trails, open space, and construction sites.

     

    Qualifications and Additional Application Materials

     

    + Any combination of education and experience equivalent to three (3) years’ experience with occupational safety and health, risk management, adult education, or another relevant field.

    + Must have six (6) months of safety and staff training experience, or equivalent.

    + Must be able to obtain a valid Montana driver’s license with a verified acceptable driving record within 60 days of hire.
