    Job Title: Lead Custodian

     

    Reports to: Buildings & Grounds Director

     

    Position Purpose: Provide responsible daily custodial operations, maintaining a sanitary and safe facility for students, employees and the public; minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure; ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner and overseeing and supporting assigned custodians in the performance of their assignments.

    Essential Performance Responsibilities:

    + Cleans assigned school facilities (e.g. classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, grounds) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe work environment.

    + Delivers various items and materials (e.g. supplies, mail, packages, furniture) for the purpose of ensuring adequate supplies to the appropriate parties.

    + Informs students, other site personnel and supervisor for the purpose of providing information regarding activities, safety and/or proper maintenance of facilities.

    + Inspects school facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in clean condition, and identifying necessary repairs.

    + Assists the Buildings & Grounds secretary in organizing and implementing written work schedules of custodial employees.

    + Assists Buildings & Grounds Director in providing feedback for custodial employee performance reviews.

    + Works directly with the Buildings & Grounds secretary to schedule and monitor substitutes as necessary, including monitoring floating custodian assignments.

    + Assist with preventive maintenance and minor repair of all custodial equipment, building equipment as directed.

    + Oversees minor maintenance work performed by custodial staff.

    + Maintains inventory of supplies. Develops requisitions with building custodians for school and cleaning supplies.

    + Meets with principals and custodians to provide reports on building needs and conditions and reports the status to the Buildings and Grounds Director.

    + Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, alarms) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning educational environment.

    + Checks buildings and grounds to ensure that they are properly cleaned and maintained - this includes snow removal

    + Arranges furniture and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and events.

    + Works with school district employees, service companies and contractors to maintain and improve the work environment.

    + Works with school principals or designee developing work orders.

    + Works with Buildings & Grounds Director to solicit price proposals from vendors for supplies and equipment and assists with soliciting price proposals from outside contractors.

    + Instructs custodial employees on how to respond to system failures, location shut off procedures for water, fire sprinklers, gas and electric.

    + Assist with preventive maintenance and minor repair of all custodial equipment, building equipment as directed.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    + Ability to operate life safety equipment (fire panels) in the building

    + Ability to use chemicals, equipment, tools and work processes in cleaning and preventative maintenance of public facilities and grounds

    + Ability to read and comprehend labels, signs and written instructions

    + Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing

    + Ability to prioritize work

    + Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a building team and district team

    + Ability to establish positive and respectful relations with all staff, students and the public to provide excellent customer service

    + Ability to maintain confidentiality

    + Ability to safely operate mechanical equipment including but not limited to waxing machines, auto scrubber, carpet cleaner, vacuum, custodial cart, leaf blower, snow blower, and weed trimmer

    + Ability to use technology and communication equipment including but not limited to the telephone, radios, work orders, and email

    + A past history of punctuality, good attendance, and positive interactions with students, staff, and public

    Qualifications Profile:

    3-5 years custodial experience preferred

     

    Experience managing people and/or projects preferred

     

    Experience working in a school setting a plus

    Physical Requirements:

    Physical requirements vary by individual job assignment but requires a minimum of the following physical requirements: Lifting lunchroom tables, walking (15-25,000 steps / day), standing, bending, carrying, climbing ladders and stairs, lifting minimum of 50 pounds, driving, pushing, pulling, reaching, sitting, and stooping.

    Working Conditions:

    Varied.

    Terms of Employment:

    12-month work year. Wage and work year to be established by the Board. Employment subject to provisions of board policy, state and federal law.

    Evaluation:

    Performance will be evaluated annually by the Buildings & Grounds Director, or in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of staff.

    FLSA Status:

    Non-Exempt.
