Weed Abatement Program Supervisor
Road and Bridge Public Works
POSITION OVERVIEW:
•Plans and coordinates weed control throughout the County (on County land and in cooperation with other landowners, both public and private).
•Manages and supervises one permanent weed technician (split with YVRA) and up to six seasonal employees in weed control efforts on County and other lands. Supervise contractors on weed control projects.
•Develop, write and implement the County Noxious Weed Management Plan as required by the state law. Enforce provisions of the state noxious weed law as appropriate within the County.
•Assess weed problems for the County and then prioritize and coordinate weed control efforts accordingly. Liaison with other government entities within the County and the state, developing cooperative weed control relationships.
•Write weed management plans for County landowners as requested or as outlined in the state noxious weed law. Develop and conduct public education programs (in cooperation with CSU Cooperative Extension) about noxious weed issues.
•Manage day-to-day budget issues for the Weed Department and cooperatively develop the annual budget requests with the Public Works Director.
•Work closely with the Routt County Noxious Weed Advisory Board.
•Create annual pesticides order and manage inventory. Build, maintain and repair spray equipment.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE LEVEL:
College education preferred, with earned Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Biology, Botany, Horticulture, Weed Science, Agronomy, Forestry or Range Science. Knowledge of weeds, herbicides, and integrated weed management, or a combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
•Manage and supervise all aspects of the weed program.
•Schedule, manage, and train seasonal weed crew employees.
•Tactfully respond to and work with landowners and other government agencies.
•Coordinate interagency weed management.
•Prepare and present classes to the public on weed management.
•Build, maintain and repair weed spraying equipment.
•Work in conjunction with the Board of County Commissioners and the Routt County Weed Advisory board to solicit project proposals and make decisions to fund projects by county residents, groups or agencies with funds made available through the Taylor Grazing Act and held in the county’s Range Improvement Fund.
•Maintain accurate daily spray records and maps.
•Provide annual reporting for appropriate county, state and federal requirements as required.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
•Colorado Department of Agriculture Qualified Supervisor License.
•Valid Colorado Driver’s License in order to operate a County vehicle.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Work is performed mostly outdoors for at least six months a year. Employee may be exposed to all types of weather conditions and pesticides. Employee must be able to lift heavy supplies, parts and tools. Employee should have a good working knowledge of the function and maintenance of spray equipment.
