Description
Under general supervision, is responsible for the removal of municipal waste and snow and ice control in an assigned district of the City; assigns personnel and equipment within the district.
Examples of Duties
1. Assigns forepersons and workers to sections of the designated district to perform cleaning of streets and alleys and refuse collection.
2. Performs periodic inspections to ensure adherence to the assigned schedule.
3. Receives and investigates special complaints and follows up to ensure that issues are properly addressed.
4. Directs the removal and disposal of snow or obstructions and the salting or sanding of icy streets during or following storms.
5. Maintains time and production records and prepares a variety of reports.
6. Reviews collection yardage reports and historical records, and consults with section forepersons in assigning workers and trucks to the various sections.
7. Reviews requests and prepares schedules for the collection of irregular refuse.
8. Performs periodic reviews of collection routes and makes changes as required.
9. Instructs employees in the care and operation of equipment and suggests improvements in work methods.
10. Handles personnel matters such as discipline, vacation schedules, and work related disputes among employees.
11. Investigates and reports on accidents.
12. Ensures proper maintenance of equipment.
13. Inspects and reports on the general condition of the assigned district.
14. Reports to superior on the availability, distribution, condition and adequacy of truck fleet.
15. Acts for superior in their absence.
16. Reassigns personnel and equipment and assumes charge of emergency relief work in unusual situations such as work stoppages, shortages of supervisory personnel and/or severe or emergency weather conditions, such as snow, ice or floods.
Minimum Qualifications
High School graduation or GED.
Two years experience in planning and supervising the activities of a large fleet of trucks and workers engaged in collecting and disposing of municipal waste.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS
City Employees Retirement System
As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:
• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;
- At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or
- At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.
• In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);
- An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;
