Description of Work Unit
Housed within the Warner College of Natural Resources, the Department of Forest and Rangeland Stewardship at Colorado State University is an interdisciplinary academic program uniquely poised to advance education, research, and outreach in vegetation measurements and forest biometry. The existing programs in the department include forest ecology, forest economics and management, forest fire science, rangeland ecology and management, resource policy and planning, and geospatial sciences. The Warner College of Natural Resources is home to five academic departments and several centers and institutes such as the Colorado Forest Restoration Institute, the WESTFIRE Research Center, the Colorado State Forest Service, Natural Resource Ecology Lab, Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands and the Colorado Natural Heritage Program. These programs, institutes and centers provide a foundation for research, education and outreach in this field. Linkages across department and colleges, and with federal and state land managers and research centers, form a broader interdisciplinary foundation for increased impact.
Position Summary
A pollinator conservation ecology position in the Mola Lab within the Forest and Rangeland Stewardship Department at Colorado State University. The employee will lead teams charged with conducting field studies on bumble bee movement ecology using radio telemetry equipment, assist in the collection of genetic data, and aid in the management of field and lab data pertinent to the projects. The position is temporary, with the possibility of extension with funding and sufficient performance. There is one position available, which is full-time and must be accomplished in-person.
Required Job Qualifications
+ Master’s degree in Ecology or related field
+ Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
+ The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Preferred Job Qualifications
+ Experience working with radio telemetry on small organisms (i.e., insects <300mg)
+ Presentations at major Entomological conferences on topics relevant to the position (e.g., insect movement ecology, radio telemetry, pollinator conservation, etc)
+ Experience conducting site selection relevant to ecological field studies
+ Knowledge of Colorado pollinating insects, especially bumble bees
+ Experience handling, collecting, and curating insects from field collections
+ Lab experience in molecular methods
+ Evidence of proficiency in basic statistical methods, R programming language, and scientific figure creation
+ Experience conducting insect-themed outreach and educational activities with K-12 and general audiences
