    Job Description

    THIS JOB OPENING IS BEING USED TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANT POSITIONS IN THIS CLASSIFICATION AT VARIOUS SHIFTS, LOCATIONS AND ASSIGNED DAYS OFF.

     

    ORDER OF PREFERENCE: The selection for Maintenance and Construction is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to: Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide and external candidates, respectively.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Education

    + High school diploma or possession of a general equivalency diploma (GED) and two (2) years of Vocational or technical training in Electronics

     

    _Twelve (12) months after an employee achieves a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), he/she shall advance to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed the required written and practical test(s), acquired the applicable certifications and has met the other requirements, including fitness for duty, work record, and job performance requirements_

    Experience

    + Mechanic Communications Field Equipment Technician ”Helper”

    + One (1) year of experience working in electronic equipment repair of communications systems equipment

    + Mechanic Communications Field Equipment Technician “C”

    + Two (2) years of experience working in electronic equipment repair of communications systems equipment; or one (1) year satisfactorily performing the duties of a Mechanic Communications Field Equipment Technician Helper

    + Mechanic Communications Field Equipment Technician “B”

    + Three (3) years of experience working in electronic equipment repair of communications systems equipment; or one (1) year satisfactorily performing the duties of a Mechanic Communications Field Equipment Technician C

    + Mechanic Communications Field Equipment Technician “A”

    + Four (4) years of experience working in electronic equipment repair of communications systems equipment; or one (1) year satisfactorily performing the duties of a Mechanic Communications Field Equipment Technician B

    + Mechanic Communications Field Equipment Technician “AA”

    + Five (5) years of experience working in electronic equipment repair of communications systems equipment; or one (1) year satisfactorily performing the duties of a Mechanic Communications Field Equipment Technician A

    Certification/Licensure

    + Possession of, or ability to obtain, a District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia motor vehicle operator’s license issued from state of residence

    + Roadway Worker Protection (RWP) Training, Level 2; within the first ninety (90) days of starting job and maintained for the duration of time in job

     

    Preferred

    Education

    + Associate Degree, or vocational or technical school degree in Electronics Technology

    Medical Group:

    Ability to satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this job. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of this job either with or without reasonable accommodations.

     

    Ability to distinguish basic colors for wire and safety identification.

     

    Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks, i.e., frequent lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally to 75 pounds.

    Mission Essential Designation:

    In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.

    Job Summary/Duties:

    The Mechanic Communications-Field Equipment Technician performs maintenance, installation and repair on the Authority's communications system equipment. The communications system consists of, but not limited to, Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), Public Address, Fire Alarm, Intrusion and Access Control, Intercom, and associated cabling. The employee performs duties using designated schematic diagrams, manufacturer's specifications and manuals, and test equipment.

     

    _Job Levels: At each successive grade level of this job (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description_

     

    _“AA Lead” Level: In addition to independently performing the most complex aspects of the duties and essential functions described, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring work responsibilities of a group or team are properly completed in a timely manner and acts in the absence of the supervisor as required_

    ESSENTIAL** **FUNCTIONS

    + Performs periodic preventive and corrective maintenance of communications equipment. Reads prints, diagrams and schematics of equipment to perform routine maintenance and/or repair of assigned equipment.

    + Uses test equipment in the performance of work. Replaces minor parts or components as directed and assists in the installation/relocation of assigned equipment according to authorized work orders.

    + Assists higher level technicians in the preventive and corrective maintenance of communications equipment.

    + Completes maintenance records on assigned equipment.

    OTHER** **FUNCTIONS

    + Operates Authority vehicle between work areas as necessary.

    + Attends assigned on-the-job and formal training classes.

    + Works various assigned shifts, based on a seven-day, 24-hour coverage schedule.

    + Complies with Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) safety rules and regulations.
