    Job Summary

    Performs technical procedures in a research laboratory under minimal supervision by applying standard scientific techniques and analytical principles.

    Responsibilities

    The Hobbs Lab within the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Utah School of Medicine is recruiting a research technician to study enzyme biochemistry, protein structural biology, and immune signaling pathways during viral infection. The Hobbs lab is a newly formed lab at the University of Utah that will use structural and biochemical approaches to understand mechanisms of antiviral signaling in both humans and bacteria. We are seeking a highly motivated individual excited to study molecular biology and basic science research in either bacterial or human contexts. The successful candidate will assist with general lab management, preparation of reagents and recombinant enzymes, and ordering of lab supplies. Additionally, applicants will work closely with all members of the lab, participate and present in lab meetings, and have the opportunity to pursue an individual research project and co-author publications.

    Specific advantages to joining the new Hobbs lab:

    + 1 on 1 training with Dr. Hobbs

    + Learn advanced recombinant protein expression and purification techniques.

    + Maintain stocks of common laboratory proteins including polymerase and protease enzymes.

    + Pursue an individual research project related to innate immunity, enzymology, and structural biology.

    + Learn advanced experimental design and be responsible for intellectual commitment to position and relevant literature.

    + Prepare common laboratory solutions, competent cells and reagents.

    + Maintain a detailed notebook of protocols and research activities.

    + Participate in lab meetings and work closely with all members of the lab.

    + Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and work areas.

    + Responsible for ordering lab supplies and communicating with vendors.

    + Manage lab safety and communicate and work with Environmental Health and Safety.

    Minimum Qualifications

    **EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT :** 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

    Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:

    **Research Technician, I:** Requires little to no related experience.

    **Research Technician, II:** Requires at least 1 year of related experience.

    **Research Technician, III :** Requires 3+ years of related experience.

    **Research Technician, IV:** Requires 5+ years of related experience.

     

    Preferences

     

    We are looking for candidates that have at least 1.5–2.0 years of availability. Previous laboratory experience in protein purification, tissue culture, or microbial culturing is preferred but not necessary.
