Description
The City of Garden City is accepting applications for Digital Media Specialist with the Communications Department. This position, u nder direction of the Communications Director creates, edits, and maintains multimedia content for outlets to include cable Channel 8, the City website, City newsletters, social media, and other communications tools. The position is also responsible for media and community relations, and advises departments, management, and elected officials on internal and external communication issues. Assists with special projects and administrative tasks for the department. Serves as backup in all communication capacities for the Department.
Examples of Duties
Principal Job Responsibilities:
+ Responsible for films and video content for Communication channels and for all City Departments; includes conceptualizing ideas, storyboarding, script-writing, editing, etc.
+ Manages trainings related to content and structure for webiste, social media, Channel 8, media releases and any other forms of communications being disseminated in City departments.
+ Maintains strong relationships with management, departments, elected officials, media representatives, peer agencies and members of the community in order to ensure that relevant and timely issues are being addressed.
+ Writes, designs and produces print and digital publications and news releases to educate and inform stakeholders on City programs, services and performance.
+ Develop, design and collaborate with City staff in creating graphics for City programs.
+ Responsible for photography and videography which includes attending events, editing and designing final products, and meeting project deadlines.
+ Assists in executing project plans to support the ongoing needs of the IT & Communications Department and other City departments.
+ Helps assess the communcications needs of City staff and other stakeholders. Assists in preparing feasibility studies for possible new communications resources; makes recommendations based on the needs of communications users.
+ Assists City Commission, City staff and members of the public in media and community relations as directed by supervisor.
+ Assists with the planning and promotion of special events in coordiation with City departments and other agencies.
+ Build and execute social media strategy through capturing and analyzing social data/metrics, platform determination, benchmarking, messaging and audience identification.
+ Perform regular accessibility audit and evaluation of City websites.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
+ Working knowledge of videography, photography, layout and graphic arts design, desktop publishing programs including Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office products and Adobe Creative Suite.
+ Possesses excellent oral and written communications and public relations skills. Ability to use creativity and sound judgment in all actions and when working with internal/external customers.
+ Ability to develop and maintain effective interpersonal relationships in the working environment.
+ Possess the necessary technical skills to assist in providing the day-to-day communications activities, i.e. cable operations for Channel 8, web site content and training assistance, press releases, brochure development, newsletters, advertising and promotional programs.
Education, Certification, and Experience:
The ideal candidate will be a recent graduate with a degree in communications or related field and/or experience in the field of mass communication, media coverage, or public relations. Other desirable skills include the ability to use technology as a primary means of communication; producing and distributing print and video public information pieces; and proven communication and interpersonal skills. Bilingual skills preferred. Must have a high school diploma and valid Kansas driver’s license.

Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds.
