Description
**Description of Duties:** The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) at Stony Brook University seeks a tenure-track, assistant professor whose research focuses on significant anthropogenic impacts on coastal marine ecosystems. Research areas could include, but are not limited to, species-level effects (e.g., movement and dispersal), food web interactions, fisheries responses, and biogeochemical alterations (e.g., nutrients, contaminants, acidification) impacting ecosystem properties. Human activities—such as energy development, water resource utilization, fishery harvesting, recreational use, and waste disposal—are transforming the coastal marine ecosystem of New York. Accordingly, there are unique opportunities to study these anthropogenic impacts and inform more effective management. The candidate is expected to carry out cutting-edge, extramurally funded research (e.g., NSF, NOAA, NYSDEC) and to interact collaboratively within the School and University at large. Candidates are expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching in accordance with their expertise.
The successful candidate will join a vibrant academic community at SoMAS, a multi-disciplinary environment providing access to state-of-the-art research facilities and with opportunities for collaboration in interdisciplinary teams to address complex marine issues within the School. Excellent potential for collaborations exists with the Departments of Ecology and Evolution, Geosciences, and Chemistry, Institute for Advanced Computational Science, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory (https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/bnl/)) , the New York State Center for Clean Water Technology (https://www.stonybrook.edu/cleanwater/) , and the NY Climate Exchange (https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/the-exchange/) . The successful candidate will commit to departmental and university service.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by attached application materials):
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in hand or anticipated by December 2026 in a marine science or closely related natural science discipline.
Preferred Qualifications:
Research experience relevant to coastal marine ecosystems and anthropogenic impacts. Demonstrated excellence in research indicated by a publication record. Experience obtaining external research funding. Experience collaborating in multi-disciplinary or interdisciplinary settings. College-level teaching experience in marine science, coastal ecosystems, or related areas. Experience in course and curricular development. Experience mentoring students.
