ABOUT THE YOUTH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (YIP)
CPW’s Youth Internship Program (YIP) employs and develops the next generation of Natural
Resource Professionals and recruits new, diverse talent into the CPW workforce. We accept
people of all ages who are in the early stages of their career path or career transition.
A Focus on Career Exploration
YIP is unique in that it’s not just a job… It is designed for career exploration, mentorship,
and skills development. While you’ll have some primary job responsibilities, we want you
to go out and explore! Depending on your interests this might include shadowing
biologists, going on ride-alongs with Park Rangers and Wildlife Officers, visiting fish
hatcheries, helping at education and outreach events, assisting with trail or restoration
projects, and more. This is a great opportunity for someone who knows they are
interested in a Natural Resources career but wants to learn more about different options.
Description of Job
Job Description:
Intern will have the opportunity to work with several different professionals within CPW to learn
different aspects of our agency. Intern will work with biologists and DWM’s to learn how CPW
works to manage sustainable populations of game and nongame species to support fishing,
hunting, trapping, and wildlife viewing opportunities.
Intern will also have the opportunity to work at the front office, developing customer service
skills, learning administrative duties and gaining broader knowledge Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
Responsibilities:
+ Represent CPW at the Outdoor Wilderness Lab (OWL) teaching a conservation lesson to sixth grade students. Owl is a collaborative effort between GOCO, Mesa County School District 51, and CPW in which 6th grade students have the opportunity to spend 2.5 days and nights in an outdoor learning environment. Lessons are primarily science and natural resources based
+ Assist CPW staff with planning and implementing outreach events such as the annual Outdoor Heritage Day (OHD), fishing clinics, hunter education programs, and other outdoor events
+ Collect Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) samples and work with customers at the mandatory check station. Mandatory checks include harvested bear, bobcat, mountain lion, bighorn sheep, and moose
+ Assist in trapping, monitoring, and capturing efforts related to Mountain Lion Study
+ Enter and analyze biological data
+ Assist with game damage mitigation
+ Assist with aquatic sampling and creel surveys, terrestrial surveys, raptor surveys, and habitat improvement projects
+ Provide customer service at the CPW field office / front desk.
+ Assist with specific projects on State Wildlife Areas to include working with the Property Technician on tree plantings, weed management, trail design and planning, interpretive sign design and other daily duties.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
+ Completion of, or are currently studying for, a bachelor’s degree in biology, natural resource management, or related field.
+ Must possess interest in pursuing a career with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
+ Must possess willingness to handle animal carcasses.
+ Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a member of the team.
+ Ability to multitask and handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
+ Ability to plan, manage and communicate personal schedule requirements.
+ Willingness to seek follow-up information to ensure proper understanding of tasks.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Proficiency in using common hand tools.
+ Ability to operate 4X4 vehicles off-road.
+ Must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills.
+ Must possess a passion for natural resources , conservation , the environment, equity in the outdoors, or similar areas.
Pursuant to the DNR-120 Fleet and Driving Standards Administrative Directive, any worker who will be expected to drive a State-owned vehicle is responsible for maintaining a safe driving record and a valid driver license prior to driving any State-owned vehicle.
+ To be compliant with the new fleet vehicle policy, Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be pulled for review for workers who:
+ Have an assigned State fleet vehicle
+ Are required to operate a vehicle as part of the position
+ Utilize a State fleet vehicle as a pool vehicle
