Salary:
BA Step 1 $48,007 or MA Step 1 $50,670 per GITA contract
Duties:
This position involves teaching in an 8:1:1 self-contained special education classroom, providing individualized instruction to up to eight students with significant learning, behavioral, and/or developmental needs. The teacher designs and implements differentiated lessons, manages classroom behavior using positive supports, collaborates with paraprofessionals and related service providers, and develops Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) to meet each student's goals.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Hold at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
• Complete an approved teacher preparation program with a focus in special education.
• Workshop on Child Abuse Identification: Completion required for certification.
• Workshops in School Violence Intervention and Prevention (SAVE) may also be required prior to certification issuance.
• U.S. Citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or Employment Authorization Document, plus fingerprinting and a background check are required.
Qualifications Desired:
Instructional Skills
• Ability to design and implement differentiated, individualized lesson plans aligned with IEP goals.
• Knowledge of evidence-based instructional strategies for students with diverse learning needs (e.g., multi-sensory reading instruction, task analysis).
• Skill in integrating assistive technology and adaptive tools to support learning.
Behavioral and Classroom Management
• Proficiency in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and de-escalation techniques.
• Ability to create a structured, supportive classroom environment that fosters independence and self-regulation.
Collaboration and Communication
• Strong skills in collaborating with paraprofessionals, related service providers, general education teachers, and families.
• Clear, professional written and verbal communication, especially for IEP meetings and progress reporting.
Professional and Personal Attributes
• Patience, empathy, and a genuine commitment to supporting students' academic, social, and emotional growth.
• Flexibility and problem-solving skills in adapting instruction for changing student needs.
• Strong organizational skills for managing multiple IEPs, documentation, and daily lesson preparation.
Knowledge Areas
• Familiarity with special education laws and regulations (IDEA, Section 504).
• Understanding of child development and how disabilities can impact learning at the elementary level.
