    The Sanitarian 6 serves as a regional leader responsible for overseeing Environmental Health programs, inspections, and staff across multiple parishes. This role ensures regulatory compliance, accurate documentation, and effective field operations while acting as the key liaison between Central Office, Regional leadership, and parish teams.

     

    The position provides guidance on the Sanitary Code, reviews enforcement actions, supports emergency response, and assists with complex environmental health issues. It also supervises parish managers and coordinators, oversees performance and productivity, and helps resolve personnel or operational concerns.

     

    This role is ideal for an experienced environmental health professional ready to lead regional initiatives, support staff, and make a meaningful impact on public health. Statewide fieldwork and frequent travel are essential components of this role. Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Possession of a current Louisiana Sanitarian's license plus one of the following, which must include one year of experience at the supervisory level or above:

    Five years of experience as a sanitarian; OR

    A master's degree in public health, food science, dairy science, environmental or sanitary science, or one of the physical or biological sciences plus four years of experience as a sanitarian.

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Positions in the Molluscan Shellfish program require that applicants complete the Louisiana Boating Education program and be certified by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

    Job Duties and Other Information

    Job Duties:

    + Oversees and evaluates regional Environmental Health (EH) programs,inspections, databases, and staff performance to ensure goals, compliance, and required documentation are met across all parishes.

    + Serves as a liaisonbetween Central Office, Regional leadership, and parish staff, coordinating staffing needs, addressing environmental or emergency response issues, and assigning personnel as needed.

    + Provides regulatory guidance and enforcement oversight,including reviewing technical correspondence, managing enforcement conferences, negotiating compliance agreements, and providing expert testimony when required.

    + Supervises and manages EH personnel,including Parish Sanitarian Managers and coordinators; conducts performance reviews; approves travel and time allocations; and recommends personnel actions.

    + Conducts and assists with complex field assessments,supports epidemiological investigations, and ensures mandated inspections for regulated facilities are completed and properly documented.

    + Maintains professional expertise and supports regional initiatives,including attending required training, ensuring completion of “Big Bets” objectives, and performing additional public health tasks as assigned.
