    Position Summary

    HIGHLIGHTS

    The SUNY Geneseo Facilities Department is looking for a reliable and dedicated individual to join our team as a Janitor. SUNY Geneseo encourages a positive workforce where employees take pride in their work and thrive in a team-based environment.

     

    As a Janitor, you will be responsible for cleaning and maintaining our campus buildings and adjacent grounds. This includes special cleaning projects, managing setup and teardown for events, and completing snow removal on sidewalks and walkways adjacent to buildings. Other duties include:

     

    + Supervising and prioritizing work assignments for a small group of custodial staff for an assigned work area

    + Reporting damages or needed maintenance repair in an assigned area for which a higher-level repair capability is needed

    + Promoting a positive work environment by modeling and reinforcing Facilities Services Workplace Protocols

    + Maintaining accurate records associated with the custodial operation for an assigned building(s) related to supplies and equipment, employee attendance, time management, and inventories

    Required Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and communicate orally and in writing to exchange information.

     

    Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States without a visa sponsorship.

    Preferred Qualifications

    DEPARTMENTAL OPERATING NEEDS

    + Experience with cleaning practices, procedures, substances, and equipment, including preventative maintenance

    + Working knowledge of small hand tools and the ability to use them to make routine/recurrent repairs

    + Record of dependability

    + Possession of a valid NYS driver’s license

    Function 1: Custodial Tasks

     

    + Cleaning and care of assigned buildings

    + Use mops, brushes, detergents, buffers, floor scrubs, and other cleaning implements to wash floors, corridors, stairs and stairwells, walls, partitions, and windows from the inside of buildings, etc.

     

    Percentage Of Time 40%

    Function 2: Equipment Setup

     

    + Set up equipment and seating facilities for public meetings, seminars, demonstration projects, etc.

    + Manage a small crew of custodial staff to complete setup and tear down for special campus events, meetings and gatherings

    + Assign work and provide oversight for the event setup in accordance with customer requests

     

    Percentage Of Time 20%

    Function 3: Routine Repairs

     

    + Perform repairs and routine maintenance work

    + Use hand tools to make simple carpentry repairs such as fixing or replacing broken shelving, hinges and screens

    + Use plumber’s snakes and/or other hand tools and preparations to unplug toilets, traps and sinks

    + Use appropriate equipment such as ladders and man lifts to replace light bulbs

    + Remove snow that is adjacent to buildings

    + Report damage or needed maintenance repair in an assigned work area for which a higher level repair capability is needed

    Function 4: Supervision

     

    + Act as a secondary supervisor of custodial personnel in cleaning and care of assigned area

    + Assign specific tasks and give verbal instructions to custodial personnel

    + Provide assistance in resolving work problems and review work while in progress upon completion
