Position Description:

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the College of Arts & Sciences at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, tenured Professor to serve as Department Chair beginning September 1, 2026. While appointed to this position, you will accrue vacation and will be required to report leave monthly following TTU’s Operating Policy 70.01 (https://www.depts.ttu.edu/opmanual/OP70.01.php) and TTU System Regulation 07.12. The successful candidate will be an innovative and collaborative Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, providing intellectual and strategic leadership for teaching, research, service, and outreach and engagement endeavors in the department, college, and university. Among other duties, the Chair will manage departmental personnel; administer the academic programs with the assistance of program executive leadership; develop and sustain connections with related professional and industry entities to promote teaching, research, development, and outreach; effectively represent the department to internal and external entities; effectively manage the unit’s budget to sustain a culture of fiscal responsibility and health; and promote the success of the faculty, staff, and students in the department. The Chair will also serve as a departmental faculty member and is expected to contribute by maintaining a productive program of research and excellence in teaching.

+ Demonstrated experience coordinating with administration, staff, students, and faculty to accomplish departmental, college, and institutional goals.

+ An established record of external funding.

+ An established record of excellent teaching practices as demonstrated by proposed plans in a teaching statement and/or participation in teaching professional development activities.

+ Administrative experience that includes maintaining significant budgets and awards and the ability to work successfully with professional budget staff.

+ A record of leadership in initiatives and activities promoting student academic success, especially those with strong implications for career opportunities or career outcomes.

+ A clear ability to promote and foster innovative activities that contribute significantly to one or more of Texas Tech’s strategic initiatives, especially the push for AAU membership.

About the College:

Founded in 1925 as one of the university's four original colleges, the College of Arts & Sciences is comprised of 15 departments and one program, offering a wide variety of courses and programs in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, and natural sciences. The College enrolls 10,309 students (8,721 undergrad and 1,588 grad), representing approximately a quarter of the overall Texas Tech University student population while maintaining a 22:1 student to faculty ratio. About the Department/School/Area:

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Texas Tech is one of the largest departments on campus. It includes 48 tenured and tenure-track faculty lines, 6-8 postdoctoral associates each year, and an annual average of 15 lecturers and professors of practice. As of fall 2025, the Department enrolls 184 undergraduate majors, and 125 graduate students, with 100 of them being supported full-time as graduate part-time instructors, teaching assistants, or research assistants. Faculty Qualifications:

+ Must hold a doctoral-level degree (PhD, DPhil, DSc) in mathematics (pure or applied), statistics or a closely related field.

+ Demonstrated excellence in an established program of research and scholarly activities, commensurate with appointment at the rank of Full Professor.

+ Established experience in academic administration, as evidenced by leadership roles.

+ Evidence of clear commitment to fostering evidence-based teaching, best-practice mentoring, and engaged learning opportunities.
