    The Position

    2026 Summer Intern - Metabolism Drug Discovery Unit

    Department Summary

    The Metabolism Drug Discovery Unit (MDDU) sits in gRED Drug Discovery. It is the home of the gRED metabolic disease therapeutic area that leads gRED CVRM research portfolio efforts and is supported by gRED functions. The MDDU also supports metabolic disease assets from the Carmot acquisition across the Roche portfolio and contributes to Roche CVRM strategy development.

     

    This internship position is located in **South San Francisco, CA, on-site**

    The Opportunity

    + Interface with industrial chemists to explore and refine chemistry towards scaffolds relevant to medicinal chemistry

    + Perform hands-on synthetic work and optimization where necessary to advance an internship project

    + Gain experience with chemical synthesis techniques, including chemical catalysis and reactions essential to a professional career in medicinal chemistry

    + Apply critical thinking and problem-solving to achieve project goals

    + Contribute to Genentech’s culture of scientific curiosity and discovery via cross-department presentations

    Program Highlights

    + **Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.**

    + **Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)**

    + **A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.**

    + Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

    + Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

     

    Who You Are (Required)

    Required Education:

    You meet one of the following criteria:

    + Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).

    + Must have attained a Bachelor's Degree (not currently enrolled in a graduate program).

    + Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).

    + Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

    Required Experience:

    + Candidate should have previously completed lecture and lab courses in undergraduate organic chemistry

    Preferred Experience:

    + Candidate preferably has experience in an advanced laboratory course or research experience in an academic or laboratory setting

    Required Majors:

    Chemistry, Biochemistry, chemical engineering or other major with a strong emphasis on laboratory techniques

    Required Skills:

    + Familiarity with basic organic synthesis reactions and techniques

    + Time management and the ability to set individual priorities and goals

    + Ability to learn/utilize analytical techniques (NMR, LCMS) to interpret experimental outcomes.

    Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

    + Knowledge of organic chemistry, biology, biochemistry at the advanced undergraduate or graduate level.

    + Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

    Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

     

    The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $26.00-$46.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other

     

    job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
