    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    A high school diploma or its equivalent and one (1) years of experience in laboratory work.

     

    College or vocational/technical training can substitute at the rate of 30 semester, 45 quarter or 720 classroom hours for the required experience provided such education includes three courses in the physical and/or natural sciences.

     

    Certain positions within this class require individuals to meet specific federal or state regulations as identified by the employing agency.

     

    Requires possession of a valid Class E driver license.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Incumbent must pass a pulmonary function test with medical evaluation, must undergo and pass regular respirator fit testing, and must wear a respirator when required. Will be subject to the requirements of the proper use of appropriate respirator.

     

    Incumbent must follow prescibed quality assurance processes and bio-safety and facilities security policies and procedures.

     

    The incumbent must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when required.

     

    Occasional travel required.

     

    Must be willing to take series of rabies vaccines.

     

    Some alternate work hours required to accomplish duties and responsibilities (may be required to assist with carcass receipt during weekends or holidays).

    JOB DUTIES:

    Necropsy duties: Responsible for assisting with procedures related to animal necropsy. This includes receiving live or dead animals, collecting blood and other samples from live animals, hoisting large animals, and assisting with animal euthanasia.

     

    Prepares surgical instruments and supplies. Assists with sample collection, distribution, and photography. Cleans and dissinfects the necropsy room, tables, equipment, walk-in refrigerator, necropsy locker rooms, necropsy draining system, loading dock and other related areas in preparation for the next necropsy. Machine washes necropsy laundry and dishes as needed.

     

    Responsible for keeping appropriate stock of necropsy supplies. Inventories supplies and assists supervisor with quotes, purchase requests and supply receipt.

     

    Tags, weighs, and refrigerates or freezes carcasses or carcass parts. Keeps up-to-date necropsy records including room and refrigerator temperatures, crematory checklists, and cematory burn charts.

     

    Holds primary responsibility for loading and starting the crematory, closely monitoring the crematory during its entire operation, and performing stockings and ashes removal. Holds primary responsibility for monitoring the necropsy wastewater treatment system including cleaning, pumping, and adding chemicals for disinfection before draining. Holds primary responsibility for monitoring the overall function of necropsy equipment and notifying supervisor and maintenece personnel when a malfunction occurs.

     

    Assists with quality assurance projects including standard operating procedure (SOP) production and revision, corrective actions, initial and annual training, accurate and complete use of laboratory forms, and archiving of completed worksheets.

     

    Once a week opens laboratory-wide biohazardous room for third-party biohazardous waste pick-up.

     

    Required to keep daily communication with pathologists, supervisors, clients and peers.

     

    Assistance to other sections: Assists the clinical pathology, parasitology,histology sections with basic laboratory technical procedures, sample pickup and distribution, biohazardous waste disposal. Assists in other laboratory sections as needed.

     

    Performs other related duties as assigned.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    + Ability to hand-lift and transfer animals (typically weighing 20- 50 lbs).

    + Ability to transfer animal carcasses (weighing up to 2,000 lbs.)to the surgical table by means of a mechanical hoist.

    + Ability to withstand adverse and unpleasant working conditions consisting of abnormal sights, sounds, and odors as a result of blood, gastrointestinal contents, body organs, flies, insects, etc.
