    Scope of Job

    To develop and administer professional liability and clinical risk-management programs and clinical quality-assurance functions. To provide risk management support in protecting UT Health RGV , its patients, and staff from losses related to illness, injury, or death sustained in the direct patient care area.

    Description of Duties

    + Initiates, coordinates, and manages clinical risk management activities for the UT Health RGV clinical enterprise.

    + Reviews and analyzes medical records to investigate patient concerns of care and grievances alongside patient relations staff and clinical operations management; obtains input from clinical providers and clinical supervisors on best practices and policy recommendations; consults with patient relations staff on drafts of administrative responses to patients.

    + Serves as an administrative liaison between UTRGV Legal Affairs for faculty, residents, students, and employees with questions and problems concerning patient communications, risk management, and relays the interpretation of guidance found in UTRGV administrative policies in a clear and consistent manner.

    + Provides direct support to UTRGV Legal Affairs in handling clinical issues, device and equipment compliance, incident management, and claims/lawsuits.

    + Provides liaison support for quality review processes including keeping lines of communication open between risk management programs and clinical directors, managers, physicians, and staff.

    + Reviews and keeps confidential medical records and internal risk incident reports in connection with preparing Situation, Background, Assessment and Recommendation ( SBAR ) assessments for legal review; coordinates standard of care expert reviews requested from clinical faculty and/or other clinical leadership.

    + Assists the UTRGV Legal Affairs health care attorneys with the management of risk incidents, claims, and lawsuits including managing the litigation hold process; locating and gathering documents and other materials responsive to discovery requests; and executing affidavits in support of various motions and pleadings in legal proceedings.

    + Identifies appropriate internal controls for departments; provides mechanisms to monitor and enforce compliance, particularly concerning recalls of clinical devices and equipment. · Prepares, or assists in preparing, Professional Liability Review Committee ( PLRC ) agendas and materials; leads the presentation of potentially compensable incidents in PLRC meetings; coordinates ad hoc peer reviews at the request of the PLRC .

    + Coordinates management of patient concerns with counterparts at affiliated institutions. · Assists with risk management presentations to and training of faculty, residents, and employees.

    + Actively participates in committees related to risk management, safety, and quality improvement.

    + Maintains professional affiliations such as through the American Society for Health Care Risk Management or other similar associations and enhances professional development to keep current in the latest healthcare trends and developments.

    + Performs other duties as assigned.

    Required Education

    Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or other healthcare-related field from an accredited university. Registered nurse experience is highly desirable.

    Licensure as Registered Nurse by Board of Nursing Examiners for State of Texas or other healthcare-related licensure such as Licensed Vocational Nurse, as authorized by the State of Texas.

    Required Experience

    Four (4) years of experience, to include at least two (2) years clinical healthcare experience and two (2) years’ experience in risk management, quality assurance, case management or related health care management field, or in legal field.

    Use of standard office equipment. Knowledge of spreadsheet, word-processing, database/case management tools, and internet software applications such as Microsoft Office Suite.

    Working Conditions

    Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office environment; some travel and weekend work is required. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple academic and clinical locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
