The Probation and Parole Major position, guided by the Department of Corrections (DOC) mission, plays a central role in managing the correctional population, promoting public safety and encouraging offenders to make positive life changing decisions for their future. * Assist with supervision of Probation and Parole Captains and all other P&P staff * Implement and oversee the Probation and Parole K9 Program * Supervision and oversight of the regional Hearings Officers * Support P&P Bureau Chief as necessary in achieving bureau and departmental goals * The Major collaboratively identifies implementation strategies for division goals, policies, performance standards and outcomes for division programs. * The Major assists in identifying division priorities to ensure consistency with department mission and goals by applying an understanding of division issues and department direction and collaborating with the Bureau Chief, P&P Captains, and other staff. * Establishes implementation processes to meet division goals and priorities. * Serves as an assistant to the Bureau Chief in the staffing and human resource authority, coordinates staffing plans and processes working closely with H.R. Bureau and internal staff. * Assures compliance with State and department policies. * Serves as a liaison with other program staff in State & local government agencies, state legislators, and local constituency groups. * Serves as the bureau’s Disciplinary Hearings Appeals designee as directed by the Bureau Chief, for all regions, ensuring compliance with the division’s Offender Discipline and Disciplinary Hearings policy. * Prepares position statements for suggested legislation for division issues and makes recommendations to the Bureau Chief and management team on proposed statewide legislation. * Assists the Bureau Chief with implementation of bureau programs through annual work plan development, based on management team priorities and strategies to ensure adequate budget allocation. * Maintains flow of communication with programs within the Probation and Parole Bureau; contract faculties; the management team; Director’s Office, Federal, State and local agencies; and citizen groups. *QUALIFICATIONS * * Bachelor’s degree in social services or a related field. * Five years of P&P supervisory-related experience. * Two years of senior-level management experience. * Other combinations of education or experience may be substituted. *PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER INFORMATION* This position requires POST Basic Certification after attending training at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy and successfully completing one year of employment with the Department of Corrections. In addition to the training and experience requirements, to be POST Certified, the successful candidate(s) must: 1. Be a citizen of the United States of America; 2. Be at least 18 years of age; 3. Be fingerprinted for a criminal history search; 4. Not have been convicted of a crime for which s/he could have been imprisoned in a federal or state penitentiary; 5. Be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background screen; 6. Be a high school graduate or issued a GED or its equivalent; AND, 7. Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 - Any person who has been convicted of engaging in or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse; or any person who has been civilly or administratively adjusted to have engaged in the activity as described are not qualified for this position. Tobacco Free - Use of all tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco products and tobacco substitutes in Department of Corrections buildings, is prohibited. In secure care facilities possession of tobacco products is also prohibited.
