    Working with faculty, and Clinic Manager, we are seeking an **_Ophthalmic Technician_** whose primary role is to provide technician/clinical support to doctors and therapists. Secondary responsibilities include limited administrative duties such as responding to messages from patients and physicians and assisting with patient requests for forms completion, prescription requests and insurance inquiries.

    Specific Duties & Responsibilities

    + Records patient history including chief complaint, information on ocular history, visual function history, past surgeries, medical condition, medications taken, allergies, learning assessment, falls risk and family history.

    + Checks pupil response to light by shining light into eye and watching speed with which pupils constrict; checks for afferent pupillary defect.

    + Instills eye drops under physicians’ direction.

    + Measures and records distance and near visual acuity.

    + Measures and records contrast sensitivity.

    + Operate autorefractor and measure spectacle corrections

    + Measure pupillary distances

    + Measures and records intraocular pressure using iCare tonometry.

    + Places orders, performs and results various ophthalmic testing as ordered by the physician (including GVF, Octopus, MP-1, HVF, Tangent Screen.)

    + Calibrate perimeters with assistance of equipment support team

    + Screens for presence of ocular motility disorders; Assist with measuring ocular deviations

    + Demonstrate tints/filters in different lighting environments

    + Use basic sighted guide techniques when walking with patients

    + Utilize interpreter services appropriately for intake and testing

    + Communicate in layman's terms with patients, family, and friends

    + Modify communication behavior for special populations (hearing, speech, cognitive impairments)

    + Scribing for provider

    + Performs basic maintenance of clinical equipment.

    + Compiles and enters data for clinical studies; may participate in other clinical research projects as needed.

    + Responsible for exam room supply maintenance.

    + Ensures medication expiration dates are current.

    + Disinfects and maintains examination rooms.

    + Understands and practices the fundamentals of microbial control.

    + Is familiar with JCAHO requirements and ensures clinic practice is compliant with regulations.

    + Non -clinical duties:

    + Responsible for reading and responding to Epic in-basket messages (clinical support pool) and answering patient questions.

    + Prep forms and paperwork for providers.

    + Provides support to front desk staff by offering triaging help for appointment scheduling.

    + Schedule testing appointments for all tests ordered

    + Add patients to Cornea schedule for same-day testing

    + Coordinate testing requests from other departments

    + Responds to patients’ questions and explains technician related concerns to front desk staff.

    + Provides input on templates/schedules to maximize patient flow and physician efficiency.

    + Maintains general medical knowledge of ocular anatomy and physiology, systemic diseases, ocular diseases and ocular emergencies.

    + Maintains required (COA) ophthalmic technician certification.

    + Order and keep track of clinical Supplies and monitors usage.

    + Maintain organization of diagnostic aids including charging and cleaning of devices (e.g., filters, trial lenses, flippers, etc.)

    + Retrieve and keep track of clinical pharmaceuticals.

    + Coordinates environmental rounds for the clinic, ensures individuals follow correct protocols and maintains clinic readiness and cleanliness.

    + Prepare clinical instrumentation for transport to and from central sterilization.

    + Orders Replacements and tracks clinical instrumentation.

    + Trains all new hires in low vision procedures and protocols to include float techs assigned.

    + Coordinates with research team to ensure smooth workflow as to not interfere with normal clinical operations.

    + Assist IT with technical issues of diagnostic equipment.

    + As requested, work with the finance department to keep an up-to-date record of diagnostic equipment.

    + Act as a resource and provide guidance to other clinic technicians.

    + Work with the optical shop to get adjustments and repairs to clinical equipment.

    + Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.

    + One year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician.

    + Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Asst (COA) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date.

    + CPR certification.

    + Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Prior experience in a clinical office setting as an ophthalmic technician.

    Role/Level/Range: ACRO40/E/02/CE

    Starting Salary Range: **$19.75 - $35.35 HRLY ($23.22-$34.02 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)**

     

    Employee group: Full Time

     

    Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
