    GCI's GIS Mapping Technician II will s upport business objectives by performing mapping tasks using GIS tools and related systems to create, update, and maintain new and existing GIS data infrastructure.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AT ALL LEVELS:

    + Review and update customer parcel maps and validate internal systems database.

    + Maintain new and existing geospatial data files and systems.

    + Compile and query geospatial data from multiple sources.

    + Analyze telecommunications networks.

    + Provide GIS support to Outside Plant Engineers, Project Managers and Technicians.

    + Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain professional, positive rapport with internal business departments, external support teams, and customers.

    + Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate accurate information to others.

    + Ability to articulate technical information in presentation format to non-technical internal and external stakeholders.

    + Knowledge and understanding of telecommunications technology industry, surveying and mapping.

    + Ability to perform mapping calculations, create, and maintain maps.

    + Ability to manage parcel maps for the company and comprehend geospatial data from multiple sources.

    + Foundational knowledge of relational database management systems.

    + Demonstrated expertise in GIS modeling, spatial databases, data storage, and cartographic principles.

    + Solid analytical and problem-solving skills with proven ability to effectively manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.

    + Knowledge and understanding of computer programming concepts.

    + Knowledge of and proficiency in using GIS software including ArcGIS 10.x/Pro, MapInfo, AutoCAD, and FME.

    Additional Job Requirements:

    This is an intermediate level position within the discipline demonstrating broad knowledge and proficiency in areas of responsibility. Performs moderately complex tasks and job duties, receiving general instruction on routine work and new assignments. Works under moderate supervision with latitude for independent judgment. Supports higher level staff in implementing more complex projects.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    + Create, attribute, and maintain new and existing geospatial data files and systems as directed.

    + Review and update customer address information (Parcel maps).

    + Validate and maintain system service boundaries and update internal systems/ database.

    + Compile and query geospatial data from multiple sources.

    + Analyze spatial data to incorporate into reports, documents, and custom maps (hard and soft copies).

    + Create and analyze telecommunications networks.

    + Act as a subject matter expert (SME) and provide GIS support to Outside Plant Engineers, Project Managers and Technicians.

    Additional Competencies:

    + Broad knowledge and understanding of telecommunications technology industry, surveying and mapping.

    + Broad knowledge and understanding of relational database management systems.

    + Broad knowledge and understanding of computer programming techniques.

    + Ability to analyze complex problems and technical situations leading to optimal solutions.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Required: *A combination of relevant work experience and/or education sufficient to perform the duties of the job may substitute to meet the total years required on a year-for-year basis

     

    + High School diploma or equivalent.

    + Associate degree in Geography, GIS, or closely related field. *

    + Minimum of five (5) years of directly related experience in a surveying and mapping environment. *

    Preferred:

    + Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.

    + Telecommunications experience.

    + Relevant telecom industry or job specific certifications.

    DRIVING REQUIREMENTS:

    + This position requires driving a company-owned vehicle, company provided vehicle, or a personal vehicle on behalf of the company. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, a satisfactory driving record, and successfully complete Defensive Driving course.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and WORKING CONDITIONS:

    + Some travel required to other systems and/or remote projects; may require travel in small engine planes and/or use of RVs.

    + Subject to adverse weather and driving conditions when in the field.

    + Worksites may be obstructed by weather, debris, and heavy equipment; power lines and utility operations may be present.

    + Field work includes walking, crawling, bending, stooping, and kneeling on varied surfaces such as roofs and in trenches often hampered by typical Alaska weather conditions.

    + Clarity of vision with good depth perception and ability to distinguish colors for driving and performing/evaluating field work.

    + Good hearing, capable of distinguishing between equipment signals and the human voice often amidst background noises, such as wind, rain, and traffic.

    + Office work is primarily sedentary, requiring daily routine computer usage.

    + Ability to work shifts as assigned, work in standard office/home office setting, and operate standard office equipment.

    + Ability to accurately communicate information and ideas to others effectively.

    + Physical agility and effort sufficient to perform job duties safely and effectively.

    + Ability to make valid judgments and decisions.

    + Available to work additional time on weekends, holidays, before or after normal work hours when necessary.

    + Must work well in a team environment and be able to work with a diverse group of people and customers.

    + Virtual workers must comply with remote work policies and agreements.

     

    The company and its subsidiaries operate in a 24/7 environment providing critical services to Alaskans and may need to respond to public health and safety matters or other business emergencies. Due to business needs employees may be contacted outside of the core business hours to respond to the immediate emergency. As such, you will be requested to provide emergency after hours contact numbers, to include your home and cell phone numbers if you have those services.
